after a month in japan at the epson spa, my rd1s has returned home to me...(no customs charge, btw) bit something is wrong!

it no longer shoots in raw mode. if set to raw or raw plus jpg, only the jpeg works.
is this a software glitch? might it work to upload the software again?

if it's a stting problem then i am not sure what that could be? i have it set for raw but the needle does not move off 'h', indicating a high res jpeg.

i'd hate to have to send it back to epson and be without it for another 6 weeks!

besides, it's rd1 #2s turn for a trip to the spa.

Joe, I know, it is written in some places around RFF as well, but could you give some details, which companies, persons you addressed, which ways, you choose, to have your EPSON serviced?

Some details on the procedure and some indicators, which work has been done and how much costs were involved?

I rarely use my R-D1 anymore and still ponder, if I give it for sale (quite a few people have already contacted me and I have them set on a list, in order, I should make up my mind).

I am at the moment in China, so mailing the body to Japan should not be very expensive. The CLA fee at EPSON for the R-D1 is also not very high, I have heard.
I think, a CLA on my camera cannot be wrong , either if I keep of give it away, as long, as EPSON offers this service.

But what format does it store the pictures in ?

If you set it to raw, does it store as jpg or as raw ? if the latter, the problem might just the needle indicator ..

Stefan.

it could not have been simpler...

i contacted dirk at japan exposures and he acted as a middle man dealing entirely with epson. all i did was send the camera to him after he sent me instructions and address.
my understanding is that epson caps the cost. it is a slow process as epson had the camera baout a month and then there was shipping back to me. there was one paypal payment directly to dirk. my cost was under $200 usd in total.
what they did -
- full function check
- RF adjust
- gauge needle adjust
- camera was opened and worked inside
- flash synch cover replace
- eyepiece ring replace

they also replaced the cover on the camera.
i know someone else who sent their rd1 in at the same time as me and his cost was slighlty higher and i assume his camera required more work than mine.
i intend to send my second body in also, as soon as i am sure this first one is working ok and i am safe to go on with just the one body.

it was a painless process, dirk kept me posted and the worst part was the waiting as epson is slow. my understanding is that epson is only going to continue doing this for about about another year.

hope this helps.

Stefan.

all is well now. i forgot how to set it to the higher resolution setting for a few minutes and panicked. i only shoot in raw and never chnage the setting normally but when it arrived back from epson it had been changed to high jpeg.

Thanks a lot for the info - this sounds great! I will contact Dirk (he might still sell his viewfinder magnifiers for Leica as well doesn't he) 🙂

Congratulations, Joe! My R-D1s also just got back from Epson via Dirk, and it's like using a new camera. (Yes, my cost was a bit higher, as I think they replaced more parts in my camera.)

First thing I did was mount my Nikkor-S.C 50/1.4 LTM, which I'd just about decided to sell, and give it a spin. Lo and behold: I can actually focus it correctly wide open now, and it turns out I actually like the results! 🙄

Dirk was a pleasure to deal with and Epson, while slow, did great work for little money. The only hiccup was that it took me almost 2 weeks to convince PayPal to let me send a payment in Yen.

i need to fully test out my returned camera so that i can send my second body in.
might as well have them both done now and hope that they last a few more years w/o trouble.

not sure why i had no trouble making a payment in yen...

Thanks a lot BackAlley for this valuable post! I will have to do this service at some point too.

glad to be able to offer the info.

i read somewhere (can't remember where) that epson has put a limit on the service - in terms of time...first the rd1 and the the rd1s and then no more service. not sure how true that is...

Very true - as is the case with any product.

You probably read it on my website: see http://www.richcutler.co.uk/r-d1/r-d1_14.htm

When the Epson R-D1s was discontinued in 2007, Epson officially stated it would service and repair the camera for six years, i.e. until 2013. Presumably the same applies to the R-D1x - so servicing and repairs should continue until at least 2016, since the R-D1x is a current model and shares most components.

That said, I have a suspicion that availability of parts will be the limiting factor, as doubtless some are now obsolete or in limited supply, and it is highly unlikely that Epson will source alternatives or remanufacture.

For details, see http://www.richcutler.co.uk/r-d1/r-d1_14.htm
