Re-Covering Canon 7

What do you do about the screws in the front of the camera body when you re-cover a Canon 7? Do you back them out a ways to get the heads over the leather? Will that cause anything to fall out on the inside of the camera? Also, is it necessary to remove the self-timer lever?
