Don't mean to hijack this thread, but since there are a lot of UK people right here... I'll be in the UK for a couple of weeks this month. Are there any places that look more or less like this in London or B'ham that you would recommend?
thanks!
Further to Michael's response, another couple of places worth a visit are:
Croydon Photo Centre:
http://www.croydonphotocentre.co.uk/
and if you fancy a trip outside London, Arundel Photographica:
http://www.arundel-photographica.co.uk/
Incidentally, Arundel Photographica is where many of the London dealers get stock from.

It is indeed a fine place, when you walk through the door you see "Wonderful Things", there's even a small gallery - also nice to know they handle repairs and do some in-store.
Our own Bob France is probably too well mannered to mention he's exhibited there ...

Michael, Paul and Bob took me there when I met up with them a year or two back. Its an amazing place that just smells right, if that makes sense?! Well worth a visit, as is a trip to Manchester simply to meet some lovely guys too. Hopefully I'll get the chance to pop back up soon...but I'll leave my wallet somewhere else if we go back to Real Cameras...my wife would go spare if I came back with all sorts of gubbins and no cash

There are no longer any shops like this in B'ham; they have all closed. Only the "new" Jessops left... and they don't do second-hand gear.

There is a London Camera Exchange in Manchester but they`ve stopped selling the second hand stuff.
Apart from Real Camera there is Stevens in the Barton arcade that sell second hand Leica ,Alpa and the like.

This is a great thread! (Perhaps not for my wallet though...)
AND VERY TIMELY - I'll be in Manchester NEXT WEEK (from Tuesday the 7th of May until Friday afternoon).
I will have to work most of the time, but DO PLAN to visit the camera shops you mentioned. If anyone is around in that time period and fancies a coffee or a beer together, then send me a PM and we can figure something out (hopefully).
Thanks

Don't know if its been mentioned but the Real Camera Co doesn't take credit cards, cash only I'm afraid. Great service though.

Mmm, must get back to Manchester some time - many temptations to damage the bank account though....

Had to move away from living near Manchester as I was too close to the Real Camera shop. I kept going in and bought stuff. So I moved to the Outer Hebrides [Scotland] - and then bumped into Jem at a gallery / cafe here

Has anyone sold or traded equipment into The Real Camera Company? Any experience with that?
I have a couple of Leica and Zeiss M mount lenses that I don't use much and am thinking I could try to take with me to Manchester and trade them towards some other equipment.
I haven't done this sort of thing before - do shops give you a reasonable value on trade in? I realise that they need to make a profit on eventual re-sale...
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have traded fear with them in the past and I think they're pretty fair. Obviously you get a little less than if you sold privately, but they have to make a profit and it does take all of the hassle out of selling.

I've sold some gear to them in the past and found the deal very reasonable. I'd give the m a try Yaron. Btw Yaron let me know what times you will be free and ill be glad to meet up with you. Send me a private mail if you like.
