Really Right Stuff tripod mount

I recently purchased the Really Right Stuff Multi-Camera L-Plate and have found it to fit the R-D1 very well with a slight bit of work. It fits on the camera perfectly as it comes, but a small amount of material must be removed from the plate around the battery door to allow it to open when the plate is installed. This can be done easily with a file or rotary tool. For those not familiar with the company, Really Right Stuff sells ballheads with quick release clamps, custom camera mounts and panoramic equipment that are top quality. I have no interest in the company other than being a satified consumer. The L plate allows for quick horizontal to vertical camera changes.

Everyone says the RRS stuff is top quality but I have yet to buy anything from them. They seem to charge quite a premium so when I bought an Arca/Swiss QR system for my Leica M I bought a Markins ballhead clamp and the camera plate from Joe Codispoti.

What is your sense of the build quality of the RRS plate?

RRS arca plates are superb..they add needed heft* for hand held shots as well.

I use an M7 which is already pretty heavy (to me at least) so the plates Joe Codispoti makes are actually pretty good because they are not bulky or heavy. I've been using one for a year now that clips into a Markins clamp on a Linhof Profi II ballhead and that combination seems to work very well for me. It will also allow me to migrate up to an MF format camera if I need to do that in the future.

It is probably better made. 🙂 The RRS B30 is deep compared to mine too, mine is very shallow in comparison. Good that there is choice, eh?
