Recommend A Bag

Here's what I'm looking for:

Something canvas, simple and light for an m-body with lens attached and a folded up newspaper. Maybe 11" x 8" x 3" or so. Kind of like the M-Classic type of bag but with only 2 pockets max and 1 or 2 closure straps (3 looks really cluttered to me). Less than $200 would be nice.

I want something super clean, minimal padding, not too deep so you have to hunt for your camera. No zippers. No velcro unless it's quiet and not too difficult to open. Ideal closure is one of those magnetic catches like a woman's purse.

I had a Domke F3-X and I like how it's very unformed and molds to your body but it's a bit too bulky an wide for a single M-Body. I tried an F8 but it's a little too small and over padded so it doesn't mold to your body.

Something like a Billingham sort of but maybe a little less "english gentlemany" looking. More urban messenger than top hat and umbrella.

Anybody know of something?

I really love the new Lowpro Rezo design. There is every size imaginable. They are not dear in price. I bought two for when I want to carry a one camera or a two camera kit. I have always like the functionality of the Lowpro gear but disliked that they looked so much like camera bags. However, these new designs are much more appealing. They have a nice zipper system too so that the top of the bag opens towards the body. It doesn't have that Riiiip! of velcro in case you are in a noise sensitive environment. Good luck. Many photographers seem to have a lot of bags. I guess we have a lot of baggage?

I'll have to stop into GAP and see if they still have them here in the states.

You are most welcome. It is about the best I have found for general wandering about as you have described, and I have Safrotto, Domke, Billingham otherwise for more serious shooting.

Army surplus stores are also great alternatives to find an inexpensive canvas bag....and then maybe slip some Domke inserts in there and you have an instant camera bag.

I like a good thick plastic bag from WalMart or the local 99 cent store. You can get one with a really strong handle so if you double up it lasts for months.

Just buy a candy bar or one of those 99 cent LED flashlights and they give you a bag free. Crumple the bag up a bit if you want to avoid the "English Gentleman" look.

I don't know if they are easily available elsewhere but Troop (London) bags are my current favourites. Since they aren't camera bags, they don't look like them. they are made from heavy canvas and internally lined for waterproofness. Add a small Lowe Pro slip case or Domke wrap and you are away. I can get in mine 1 rf with 35mm attached in slip, an ipod, a digicam, purse, makeup bag, fags, bottle of water, newspaper, several pens, notebook, emergency girlie stuff and mobile though by this point it is bulging. it's about 11"x9"x2.5"

I mentioned this in another thread, but I made my own. I had a mekko f3x that I sold because it was too bulky and I like my homemade bag better. My bag recently survived (with flying colors) a weekend shooting at hermosa beach.

BTW, the A&A bags from PhotoVillage are awesome. I have Penn's satchel. Fits my ZI w/35 or 50mm lens, my Leica IIIa w/21mm lens and a 90mm lens, plus all my other crap.

On the other hand, if I lived to be a thousand NOBODY would ever mistake me for an "English Gentleman", even if I had 10 Billingham bags tailored into a Seville Row suit.....
