Whats wrong with Dublin? From my travels I see the Irish invariably migrate to an Irish pub in any city they visit so you might as well stay at home. 😀

Lets face it, any major city do pretty much the same thing on New years eve. One of the best nights I went to was in Zurich but not on new years. Stunning firework display over the lake perfectly ochestrated to music. Zurich is a very nice place and within easy reach of a lot of very nice day visits including Rheinfall, europes biggest waterfall (not highest), Andermatt lovely very old mountain village, Luzern beautiful on a lake, Konstanz on a lake (austria) all within reach using the fantastic swiss public transport system. Great variety of lakes and mountains. The Alt Stadt (Old Town) in Zurich is full of great restaurants and bars beautifully illuminated at night. Good place for night photography. And the central area is small enough to walk round.

How about Vienna?

Am leaning towards a bit of both, with hopefully some wild communal partying around New Years Eve/ New Years Day, with some more easygoing pursuits around that 🙂

Let me throw Vienna into the mix. They have festivities all over the old city on New Year's Eve - Live music, dancing, performances, food and drink stands ...

Berlin is always a blast. Paris? Sure. Prague is simply gorgeous but very full around the winter holidays. How about a warmer place? Barcelona or Madrid?

I'd recommend Moscow. I'm sure its not like other usual suspects but its also the least photographed of all major European cities.

I should really be suggesting Prague, but no, I'd say you might try the trio - Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest. All quite close to each other (especially Vienna to Bratislava, one hour or so by train), and if you get bored with one city, you can switch to another. And Bratislava is coming along very nicely in last years!

I second a ski resort in Switzerland, I've never been to Zermatt but I hear it's quite nice. I know the Engadina valley (around St. Moritz) and it's really beautiful too, with lots of things to do for a non-skier: spa, walk in the woods, take one of the mountain trains and eat at 3000m then roast in the sun, tour the small valleys in a horse led sled, etc. If there's snow, the scenery will be unforgettable, and you'll have plenty of things to shoot. And on New Year's Eve there will be plenty of parties around.

Or enlarge the European boundaries just a little and take a plane to Marrakech for a hotter climate.

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody, you've given me a lot of food for thought, and quite a number of places to add to my travel list for the future.

For New Years this year, Berlin it is, and the better half & I have begun the apartment rental search, as we seek out a base of operations for the week,

Paris!!!! it was the best New Years eve ever!
everybody goes to Champs Élysées with their own champagne bottle, the avenue is crowded, the countdown begins, trois..deux..un.. Bonne Anneeeeee!!! all the corks fly away from their bottles, champagne everywhere, smiles, kisses, happiness...
