Yes, it's a gimmick, it's a diversion, a toy.

Yes, I intent to try it in camera, but I really doubt if it's something I'll use regularly.
I'll try it with a roll of the cheap Kroger/Ferrania 200 next weekend if I get the chance.
I tried it with a few others, like urban scenes, and it was clear it didn't work, not to clutter up the thread here with poor examples ...
These just look to me like somebody left a yellow filter on the lens.

I'm wondering about bright street signs at night, custom cars, and shop window displays of bright backpacks as subjects for this. Although market stalls with fresh produce could turn out nice and weird.
