I had that same problem with my epson 4490 till I noticed there is a lock unlock switch for the film part it is just below the glass on the top. If this is in the lock position it makes a grinding noise and wont scan but if it is unlocked it scans just fine.

I always recommend B&H Photo or Adorama. You may find the same item for 1-2% less somewhere eles, but those are two very ethical and reputable dealers that will not jerk you around. You can always be assured their prices are fair.
