Nye watch oil or Hoppes gun oil and the expensive kind of bicyle chain grease.

I have the same question for FallisPhoto, as there are quite a few of expensive bike chain "greases" out there these days. And some of them should never come near a camera.

For greases, I've been using two with success:

Lubriplate, "the original white lubricant" and
Gunslick by Outers Lab, which contains graphite.

Each used according to the situation.

Are you talking about Pedro's?

I'm using Motorex Bike Grease. It's a calcium based grease that resists aging and won't absorb water and turn white if it gets damp. The thing I was most interested in though is that it prevents galvanic corrosion. When you have various metals electroplated over one another, especially nickle and any copper based metals (like brass), you get a very low grade electric current. This can, over time, corrode the places where the metals touch one another. The wrong grease can compound the problem. It can do weird things to the grease itself too. Take a look at the grease in an old Agfa Isolette sometime.

In an old unmaintained Agfa Isolette, the low grade current through the grease they used will have carried some of the brass into the grease, which is why it turns the grease green (originally it was white -- this is galvanic corrosion). The current also helps some of the elements in the grease to form polymerase chains. Instead of lubricating the helical threads, they weld them together with a whole lot of submicroscopic threads of something resembling plastic. This is why so many Isolettes have frozen focusing rings.
