Repair Estimate for my M9!

. . . it never occurred to me to budget ahead for some costly repair. Mechanical (film) Leica cameras are not costly to maintain or to repair if you take good care of them. With digital cameras, it seems to be a different situation. No matter how well you baby your M8 or M9, "something" may happen, and a repair is needed.

Yes. Digital cameras save us the costs of film and processing, which can be substantial if you're an avid shooter, but it's becoming apparent they can often require a considerable maintenance premium over their film counterparts. So the actual cost of ownership my be closer in the long run than it appears at first glance.

By the way, since I downloaded M9Info, my computer has been taken over by some malware or virus. Whatever I click on, I get directed to Windows Media Center.

Edited: it is the Widows Media Center Virus.
I turned off that computer, and I am using other computers until I get it cleaned from the virus.

They may add a one year warranty, I think. No matter how I look at it, I will be happy to get my M9 in working order.

Obviously a great deal. Your camera will be as good as new -or even better, as the shutter has been broken in and there won't be any oil droplets 😉.
Anyway this is just one example of the value of Leica equipment - it does make sense to have it repaired and not just dump it and go for the latest and greatest new offering.

Thank you for the M9Info link. I will check out DNG files for my M9. This app is useful for someone wanting to buy a used M9.
I get a ZIP file when I download the M9Info software. Then, somehow, I am not extracting the files correctly, or I am not doing something right.

Hello Raid,

as soon as you can use your computer again (btw I am sure the virus has not to do with my software) then just try the following:
extract the complete contents from the zip - there is a directory called <m9info> inside to a place of your choice.
Inside the the directory is the .exe file and some directories which are used by the program. Dont delete or move the away then.

Anything should work now when you start (or doubleclick) the program-File.

I just checked it again with Windows 7 - even inside a Virtual Machine - and anything seems ok.

Anyway - feel free to contact me if it still dosnt work.

It was most likely a coincidence that the virus got to my computer at the same time as I was trying to use your software.

I will first get the computer cleaned up, and then I will try uing M9Indo.

While I'm pleased that Raid's repair isn't going to break the bank, why is it acceptable that repairs with Leica are like playing the slots? Pull, FREE! Pull, $3000! Pull, $450.

I'm pleased you're happy Raid but I can't help feeling that it's a bit weird that people find it acceptable to pay $500 to Leica for a camera that costs what it does in the first instance. I'm always at a loss as to how people translate this kind of thing into a good value company and product, it should be free because it was obviously sub standard when sold new.

Is the latest digital M free of defects, and should it be covered by a never ending warranty? It is a risk that we take when we buy such cameras. No electronic device is covered forever. I have friends who are mad at BMW and Mercedes for having very costly repairs after a few years, and when out of warranty. They switched to Japanese cars.
