Repair of a Leica I?

The Leica I is likely built much simpler, while in essence pretty much the same as the later II and III. I'm assuming they improved on the design but never radically changed it. No need, since it worked and proved successful anyway.

Any skilled repairman can tell you the details. There's a thread on repairpeople's contact data in the Leica M forum!

Post a shot once you've bought it, always nice to see a camera on it's way back to functionality!

A Leica 1 is remarkably simple, without a self timer nor slow speed mechanism.

Some of the body parts are bent metal with finely tapped holes, whereas these body parts became castings in the later II and III models.

Much of the basics are similar to the later cameras, like the shutter mechanism and the film advance.

A tip I got from the Leica User's Group (LUG) forum awhile back is to rub glycerine into the vulcanite a couple of times a years to keep it from cracking/ falling off. Any pharmacy should have it and it's cheap. After you rub it in, you can let it sit at room temp overnite, then remove the excess with a rag.

The large screw that stops the focusing ring left on top looks strange to me. With the I, always be extremely careful when removing/replacing these screws. They screw right into the soft aluminium. The tread in the aluminium is easily damaged.

Erik.

Be careful of the vulcanite, it looks as if it is lifting and is probably quite brittle. Get it glued back down before it cracks.

It doesn't seem brittle, but it is lifting. It will be a while before I can afford to have it repaired, but this is one of the things I want taken care of.
