Due to graduate school, I had to put my camera habit on hold for a while. However, I was recently driving across the country and happened into a little camera store that had an old Leitz New York swing-away polarizer for 39mm lenses. The filter has a bit of separation (1/4"x3/8") but the price was right and I'm generally optimistic about these kinds of things, so I went ahead and bought it.
In another thread, I noticed that someone mentioned replacing the glass in one of these old filters with some modern equivalent. Can anyone suggest a suitable filter diameter that I could salvage a new piece of glass from? The original Leitz glass is 4cm across.
On the other hand, does anyone have experience with reversing the separation of these type filters? I'm kind of thinking that it may just be held together with Canada Balsam and that gentle heat and pressure may be able to reverse the separation. However, the other thought on my mind is that the polarizing gel in the glass sandwich might be polyester or something that acts badly when heated.
