At last I have replaced my trusty old XA with another XA, I wore my last XA out, in use form 1983 until last year, I needed to source a replacement and was hovering on fleabay until a reasonable one for an ok price became available. Just bagged this one, hopefully will arrive this week, which is good as i have a few days off

was one of my favorite cameras until a fall put it out of commission. i've seen a few pop up in the classifieds recently for very friendly prices, usually in the $40-$80 range.

enjoy your XA!

Many thanks, Im on night shifts at present, I'm off all next week, if it arrives by then I will shoot a rol of HP5 through it,

good luck with your quest for a decent XA

Way back in the late 1970s my best friend at school came from a really well off family, he had a Minolta 110 Zoom MK1 and eventually an Olympus XA, I had a Kodak Instamatic 177X, my family were not so well off, infact money was very hard to come by for us. I always marvelled at his XA it felt like a hitec jewel. Mind you in 1981 my mam and dad bought me for Christmas a Pentax SLR (an MV)., I realised this was such a sacrifice to get me this, I cherished that camera, I felt like a king having a SLR.................happy times

You gotta love the XA. I bought one in🙂 good condition and with a A16 flash from a camera fair for £45 (after some haggling). I liked the camera so much, I got a second one at the next fair for £10! Wonderful camera, especially for the streets.

Dammit. You guys have got me all nostalgic for owning an XA. Best little camera I ever had - probably better than the larger SLRs I owned if the truth be told - I certainly took some of my best film captures with it while roving the world on business. So convenient, pop it on a surface at night and let it work out the exposure (up to 30 seconds iirc).

Anyway, bidding on one on ebay as we speak.

I really should stop reading this forum!

Hi,

Dare I say that the XA2 and XA3 are just as nice as the XA? I had an Olympus XA when they were new and the repair once the RF had taken a knock cost a fortune, and I had to take it back again one lunchtime to get the repair sorted out.

So I bought the XA2 and still have it, but I've since added another XA and XA3 and XA1 to the collection and enjoy them all. (But there's no way I'd pay as high as £10 for one, I mean there are limits... Even with the posh leather-type case and flash etc I've paid a lot less.)

Regards, David

I were lurking around XA when I learned about ebay. But they always went for more than I wanted to pay! Later I got XA2 and when I got used to pay more I discovered I'm fine with XA2 and other cameras so I'm still without XA and feel content. That said, time is greatest of healers 😀

Upgraded from XA to XA2

Upgraded from XA to XA2

Well, OK... but it is a bigger number.

Truly, I sold my two XA cameras, and purchase two nice working XA2 cameras for $20 (both)

Loved my XA's, have managed to keep them around for years. However, found I wasn't giving the XA2 models a fair shake.

1) many and nicer examples available cheap
2) image quality only SLIGHTLY less than XA. Have lost track of whether it's even noticeable.
3) faster to deploy because of the zone focus
4) no searching the patches to focus in the tiny viewfinder
5) a penchant to add a minor vignetting, which I find I like

Turned out that I am pleased with my "upgrade". I've always liked zone focus, and often get as good image focus as I can muster with the hunt in the rangefinder.

The vignette is interesting to me. I have a friend who judges competitive photo events. He told me that vignetting (slight) scores higher points often, as it is a compositional tool to prevent the eye from wandering off the edges of the image in the corners. As I recall one of his comments, "Why do you think Adobe included a vignetting tool in Photoshop?"

In any event, I have never found the slight vignette from an XA2 objectionable.

Sold me, and it's actually more of a joy to shoot the XA2's than the XA rangefinder.

It may be that I worked to hard for good images because of the popularity, impression and cost of the XA.

I just throw the XA2 in my pocket, whip it out, check the zone, compose without consideration for the rangefinder, and shap a shot. I think I may actuall be getting better photos because of the "ease of use" factor.

I don't even have an XA now that I can list on the forum.

And, I encourage those who are on a serious and long hunt for a well priced XA, I might encourage you to just pick up an XA2 at "throwaway pricing" and get some shots in while you are waiting.

Who knows. I might actually wear out an XA2, but there is so much less to break, it seems.

your a bad influence, I'll have to go and get an XA2 now

After seeing so many people here at RFF talk about the XA, I had to get one. I must admit I like it. It won't replace my SLRs, but it sure is handy to carry and gives good photos.

I talked about it to a friend at work and he found one in a pawn shop for peanuts. Unfortunately, it didn't have the opening clam shell cover. It won't really work without it. I bought a parts one of ebay and managed to fix it. Didn't have a clue what and how to do it, but stumbled into fixing it some way.
