I have been using a KM 5400II scanner for the last 6 years, and I really love it. It stopped working in March and I had it repaired (2.5 months). Unfortunately, after 2 films it stopped again, so I have sent it back for more repairs.
In the interim, I tried to purchase a secondhand 5400II as a backup. I tried a 5400II and a 5400, but neither worked properly.
I'm hopeful that my own 5400II can be repaired, but I'm still looking for a backup. I'm considering the Epson 700 or one of the Reflecta 7200 machines.
I would be grateful for any information on these scanners and/or other suggestions.
Regards,
David

No flatbed scanner is going to come close to the quality of the DiMage 5400. If you can't repair or replace it, you should perhaps look at one of the Nikon scanners.

Frankly for 35mm I'd forget the Relecta and the Epson - just ain't good enough.
You say the other 5400's did not work properly! Why?
As you may be aware, depending on OS and applied software these scanners can be very indifferent.
I have a Minolta 5400 1, 5400 11 and a Minolta multi scan pro - all running fom Mac OS without problems - but major headaches initially!
Backup to a 5400 is another 5400! Everything else is substandard!

This is what I have been thinking. I've been looking for secondhand scanners (Konica Minolta or Nikon) but so far no luck. :bang::bang:
If I'm unsuccessful, this leaves me with some of the newer film scanner such as Reflecta. How good are they?

Problems with USB connections, and switching on & off.

Does it make sense?
Only 35mm scanner that is good enough is MK 5400? (Which is not available any more). Is it a Stradivarius?
No any present available scanner can perform similar/better?
Just wondering what to buy. (and don't know how to proceed)

How about a Canon FS4000US? I use one with Vuescan, it's pretty decent. Alternatively there are the Reflecta scanners, I understand the DMAX is a tad low, but that does not really matter if you're mostly doing BW film.

Hi
I had this USB issue with mine. I am using a firewire card now and it works perfectly.
The on/off thing might be just a simple electrical problem? I'd bypass the switch if this was to happen. After all, my Quad amplifiers have no on-off switches either ;-)
