Review: Leica Elmarit-M 28mm ASPH. f/2,8

I've been considering this lens to replace an older Elmarit and your review was helpful. I enjoyed the photos and the lack of silly charts. You use the lens for real photos and most of us can relate to that. Thanks.

I agree – a helpful kind of review!

One point might be added: it's a contrasty lens and is likely on sunny days to yield fried highlights (for example, on the arm in the fourth picture). For this reason some folks might prefer a Summilux, or Passport's older Elmarit, instead of this newer one.

First off, this is a nice review. And the photos are good. And it is refreshing not to see photos of cats and dogs.

As for the lens contrast, well the 28 Elmarit ASPH renders like most modern ASPH lens designs. Maybe this type of high micro contrast is an acquired taste. I've used all three of the more modern 28 mm Leica lenses and while the type IV 28 Elmarit is my favorite, the 28 ASPH does a nice job. The differences certainly are not worth worrying about. All three take great shots.

FWITW: The type IV (46 mm filter thread) and the 28 Summicron are so close in rendition that you would be hard pressed to tell photos taken with either one apart from one taken with the other.

Great review. The 28 f/2.8 asph is a fabulous lens. I prefer it's 39mm filter size over the larger Elmarit IV and Summicron 46mm filter size. The f2.8 isn't that big a factor when shooting digital where the speed can be easily bumped up.

Thanks for the kind replies,

Dirk: I bought mine two years ago for 1000 euro, if I remember correctly 6bit coded with warranty. That is very cheap for a Leica lens that only goes up in value. It's better than putting it in a bank account.

Thompsonks: I forgot to put the contrast thing in my online review!!! It was in my draft!!! What happened haha?! I'm gonna update the article tomorrow.

Thanks again guys for the kind comments!

Good review. I owned this lens for a short while, selling it only because I kept inadvertently moving the aperture ring while focusing. Too small for my fingers. IQ was very good and I liked the amped contrast.

This lens is superb, and unlike some of my other Leica glass, really flare resistant.
I appreciate the excellent and interesting photography that accompanies the review, instead of the seemingly same five group of shots that accompany other reviews, no matter what lens or camera they are reviewing.

Hello, fellow
I bought a Emarit f.2,8 28 mm. preasph IV, 950 €
but has no box, and no lens cap, but if it happens
one UVIR filter parasols with lid, and a circular metal.

I was wondering if you know of any place to buy
on-line or second-hand original Leica.

Very good post

Thank you

I like the Elmarit 28mm. It is handy and the hood make the lens looks even better. The high contrast on Sony A7 black and white is just right to me.

Jip, if you're still around, where is that beautiful multicoloured town at the end of the article?

Nice rview of one of my favorite lenses. I usually pack this Elmarit and a 50 Cron when traveling and am pretty much covered.
