I don't have any particular favourite spot. I do mainly street photography and I like to hang around the old districts like Yaumatei, Shamshuipo and the Eastern districts. Sometime I will just hop on any bus and then hop off when I see something interesting 🙂

I'm interested mainly in street/documentary photography, HK really is a heaven for street photography with soooo many different culture and things happening at the same time, and u really need to travel long to find sth interesting.

Andrew, how do you like your RD-1? are those B&W photos of yours done by this camera or by film?

as for me, I usually take my MP out with 24/2.8, 35/2, and 50/2. Of course all in my alice bag.

sometimes I am in the mood of doing slow photography and i will take my Plaubel makina out, very occasional though.

I also use my TX-1 but I only know that "Tin Cheung" in TST can do prints for a reasonable price.

One of my favourite spots are the village behind all the seafood restaurants in Lei Yue Moon.

Its a pity that all the camera shops in Tung Ying need to move by end of month....

Which do you think is still the best lab in HK?

Hi Alice,

The pics in my gallery are some of my old work that is being digitized recently. They were all taken with an M6TTL with T-400CN film. R-D1 is great fun to use, and it behaves like a Leica except that is has a 1.5 crop factor, a CCD and a slightly noiser shutter. You can use Leica lenses and other screwmounts with excellent result. For modest enlargement, I think the pictures come out great. I mostly do B&W work and get them printed on an Epson printer.

I have no idea which is the best lab in Hong Kong because I used to print my own work in a wet darkroom🙂

yeah i hear you... i used to do my own printing too when i was still in the States, but not in HK anymore. and everytime i tried to get places to do B&W prints here, they always do a bad job and they charge a lot for that.

I still bring my rolls to Color 6 to have them developed these days but am a bit disappointing now as they have also changed to using Fuji's "magic hand" digital machine. i like their old projection style.....

I think it is almost impossible to find any commercial lab that does good B&W prints these days. Have you thought about digital printing with injet printer?

i thought about starting to do digital printing, but I am completely ignorant in this area, can you give me a lesson 101 on this.....i mean what scanner is good, printer, etc.....
allow me to ask a dumb question to start with, so basically i get the rolls developed and then just scanned the negatives?
i am sick and tired of getting dissapointed at the labs in HK.....

Hi Alice,

Mastering digital printing, second edition by Harald Johnson(ISBN: 1592004318) is an excellent book on printing. Do you shoot mainly colour or B&W? If you shoot black and white, joining DigitalBlackAndWhiteThePrint at groups.yahoo.com will give you invaluable info on digital B&W printing.

If you shoot film, you can just get them scanned by the lab. But quality varies and you have to shop around a little. Some would like to get a film scanner and DIY. I had a scanner before, but it just took such an awful lot of time that I hardly ever used it.

ummm...

i nearly have forgotten this thread as there were not many responces at first.... it is great to "meet" you all here!! let me also tell something about my "shooting" although i am just a beginner:

i often take my Canon L1 with Canon 50/1.8 or 35/1.8 LTM around everywhere i go, trying to shoot people and street scenes, and also street cats and my friends... it seems that everywhere is having a drastic metamorphosis any minute, one day you wake up and the whole street, the whole people has gone!

i too find the prints from most labs unsatisfactory, i have sent my negatives to color six, photo scientific and a shop called "golden photo" in mongkok, seems like the quality of the results is quite unstable at times... i wish i can do B/W D/P myself, but hardware and a devoted space are critical; or at least find a lab that charge resonably with reasonable results...

i also have a hard time digitalising the film as i only have a cheap flatbed... but

again, it is wonderful to know that someone appretiate rf film photography!

Guys over at the Hong Kong Leica Fan Club think very highly of this lab when it comes to digitizing images. Personally I haven't tried it as I mainly used my R-D1 these days, but it might worth a try if you live or work on the Hong Kong side:
