It is nice to meet you all.

I have a Bessa R2a + 35mm Summicron + 85mm Nikkor
I am actually getting a 24mm Elmarit TODAY and I am beside myself with excitement.

I enjoy people photography and I tend to shoot B&W more than colour.
I have been using a small photolab mainly for its convenient location + cheap price. I ask them to scan the pictures for me. I would be interested in trying the colorlux express to see if it is significantly better. Thanks for that !!

i also have the elmarit 24/2.8 apsh, i like it a lot but i feel it renders too contrasty pictures at times. nonetheless a great lens....
where are you getting it?
 
Yesterday when I put battery in my newly arrived Yashica Electro GT, I noticed that it is not working as it should be.

Advice from Yashica experts on the Internet is that I need to open the camrea and replace an internal part.

I am going to give it a try later on today.

Anyone here has done self services to their cameras?
Any tips or must-have tools? 😛
 
I never happy with the print out of the B&W photo from shops in hk (though, I've only tried a couple of them!). Unforturnately, I just can't afford the money and time to develop a wet darkroom here in HK. So, what I'm planning is to get my film developed from the shop and scan, adjust and print it at home. Any suggestion for a good printer for B&W photo? I'm thinking to get an epson R800 for that, have anyone used or using it for B&W photo? I would be grateful if anyone can share their experience on B&W Digital printing with me.

By the way, I've a Bessa R2A with a leica 50 f1.5 lens at the moment, I think i will be buying a 35mm lens soon, are there any suggestion for a 35mm lens which would give good contrast for B&W photo?

I've heard many good things about the GT/GS, i knwo that's the common problem for most the old/used yashica on the plastic pad which tigger and control the shutter, if i remember it rite, they called it the pad of death, I guess that's what u need to get fixed and it shouldn't be too hard to do if u have the correct tools. I've fixed my viogtlander vitro with just some small screwdrivers and a watch opener. Anyway, hope u can get it fixed and show us some photos taken by it soon.

R-800 is supposed to be a great printer for colour work. Some find the B&W prints it produce to have slight colour cast because it need to produce some of the tones with colour ink. I think the new R1800 uses 3 B&W ink cartridges to reproduce the complete tonal range. You can find some reviews on luminouslandscape.com.

Others go a different route and use 3rd party dedicated B&W ink systems (eg. MIS Associates). According to people who use them, they give excellent results with lower cost as they have bulk feeding systems for some Epson models. If you want to go this route, check which particular models are support by the ink system first.

Personally I use single black printing. That is using the black ink to produce the whole tonal range. It is supposedly not as smooth as quadtone printing, but the result I got from printing on matte paper is pretty good to my eyes. Make sure you make a custom dot gain curve for your dedicated monitor-printer combination first. You can find more info here: http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Monitor-Profiling.htm 😉

Bessa R2A this is one camera I really want to get ... but I think I would wait for the Gray Version.

Anyway how do you like your R2A so far?

I'm also a Hong Konger and I'm a happy Bessa R2 + 40mm summicron-c user~~
I shoot slides and get them scanned in my minoita DS IV ......and i'm now considering a printer......R800 seems good but I think andrewch's suggestion of 3rd party ink system is great as I have a old epson printer also...

so andrewch, do u know where can i find these ink in HK?

I think you can find only find 3rd party system in Hong Kong, and they can be found in computer centres in Mongkok and Shamshuipo. They are cheaper than Epson ink but they are not archival. If you are looking for archival inks, you have to get it from overseas. Take a look at www.inksupply.com and www.lyson.com. You can get additional info on B&W prinint at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/. As I mentioned in previous message. Alice - I usually get my stuff from Dr. Joseph Yao. I used to go to Tien Cheung but I have discovered that Dr. Yao has consistently lower prices. He is also more polite and responds quickly to emails.

2REP - I love my R2A. This is my only rangefinder camera so I don't have anything to compare it to. I am sure you have already read all the details from cameraquest.com. The camera is surprisingly heavy in your hands which makes it stable but not too heavy to be a burden when walking. The build quality is good but not brilliant and the plastic grip is already slightly loose. I expect my Bessa to last a few years but nothing like a Leica which suppose to last a lifetime.
Battery life is very good and I have shot 30 rolls before changing batteries.

I am more interested to know as many good photolabs as possible.

pardon me for my ignorance and please educate me, who is Dr Yao, what does he do and where to find him?

I usually do my color enlargements (11x14) at C&P in Wahchai, they do a pretty good job but they don't do B&W.
I have yet to find a place which can develop nicely

Thanks Apple Juice for your comments. R2A really sounds like a good camera then. Currently I'm shooting with a FED 5B. I can tell you this Ukranian comrade has attitude! Try anything slower than 1/8 and it shakes like Elvis! *you can actually see the view in viewfinder shifting to one side!* and the film advance not always working at its 100% ... that's why I so really want to get something more reliable ... and with a light meter of course!

Digital Force Ltd. (previously John Leung) is an excellent lab for B&W development and printing, used mostly by professionals but no eyebrows were ever raised towards ignorant amateurs (myself). thanks for yoru advice, maybe I am just out of luck or something, I have done both color and B&W developing and prints at John Leung a while ago but both times the negatives turned out to be very thin (and I know it shuldn't be), maybe I can give it a re-try soon....

Dear existrandom,

Dr. Yao does not deal in used Leica gear.
I would recommend going to Tien Cheung in TST for 2nd hand gear.
I got my 35mm Summicron 2nd hand from Tien Cheung at a good price.
