Apologies if this has already been suggested, but the Highwalks and the area around the Barbican centre could be quite interesting. There's also a street exhibition on at the London Museum which may still be on at the time of the meet.
I was wondering about the Barbican too, what are the Highwalks?

Hello Simon.
Yup, that is Trellick Tower in the background and this is the start of Portobello Market. What did you think when you were there? I noticed that it was much more lively on Saturday than usual with the weather becoming blisteringly hot.

alright, good to know. the only name I had for it was "the streets with the big market in between notting hill and that architectural highlight of atrocity".
I usually don't care much for markets, but I thought this area was really quite interesting. if memory serves me right I was there on a saturday as well, lively indeed and an eclectic crowd to say the least. fine with me!

The Highwalks are the old elevated 'streets' from the post war rebuilding. All that Corbusier et al inspired functional living that sprang up after the war; that now often gets hammered for its brutalist style and billions of gallons of concrete. Basically, we're talking about the Barbican and surrounding area. It could be interesting as its starting to disappear in some places and you're left with the odd mix of well maintained hip housing, urban decay and some amazing urban landscapes/vistas.
Trellick Tower, famously featuring in 'Tucker's Luck' should anyone from the UK of my sort of age remember...hmm, could be flying solo there perhaps
Remember when Nico visited you and we were due to meet up at the Barbican, it was a wash out with the flooding and you couldn't get out of Reading, I spent a good few hours roaming the Highwalks and the Barbican generally, my overall impression was that I should go back more often!

I don't think it's a monstrosity, it's very bold, yes, but at least it's not bland like 95% of architecture!
Your picture looks familiar...

- Meet at 10am at Paddington (perhaps nearby next to the canal).
- Walk along the canal through Little Venice through to the Trellick Tower and then 'do' Portobello Market. Walking all the way down to Notting Hill Gate tube.
- Have dinner at The Swan right by Notting Hill Gate (Fullers pub, good cheap pub food/beer) around 2-3pm.
Just to point out that this area is pretty much the stamping ground of Roger Mayne, one of the great, and to some extent, unsung pioneers of British street photography in the 1950s.
See http://www.rogermayne.com
Edited to add: In fact, the Trellick Tower is on the site of Southam Street, which was demolished so the tower could be built.

Great.
So, how does this look:
-Friday
Brighton for anyone who wants to get out of London. Or, somewhere else....?
-Saturday
AM: Paddington >> Notting Hill gate via Portobello Road
Dinner: Pub @ Notting Hill Gate @ 2-3pm
PM: Barbican / Highwalks
-Sunday
AM: Spitalfields / Brick Lane / East End
PM: ??? Stay around here? Go somewhere else?
For the Sunday, we could start on the Thames somewhere and walk to Brick Lane, I don't suppose much happens there until midday?

Im not sure if this has been mentioned. There's an exhibition on Street photography in London over the last 100 years at Museum of London. Probably worth visiting?
I'm checking it out tomorrow, will report back!

I went to Brighton this afternoon for a couple of hours. Gorgeous day, didn't catch any photos.
I had a walk around the Lanes and the seafront and the High St. Perhaps it was my mood and perhaps it was because it is a Friday today, but it didn't jump out at me. Does Brighton sound good for the Friday or should we explore some part of London that we could not with the 15 or so people we'll have on Saturday & Sunday?

I think london is indeed big enough to explore on friday without being bored on sunday. I don't mind either, but if forced to decide would vote for london (or maybe oxford?)

Saturday . I just hope that I will ' recognise ' someone I have never met - just look for a crowd with archaic cameras ?

Somehow , I have lost my pre-war Contax mount collapsible Sonnar , it should have been with one of the KNeBs , but I have a habit of putting something down and forgetting immediately , so Goddess knows where it is .
