RFF & Leica Prices on Ebay

Is the RFF driving the prices for Leica bodies and lenses on ebay upward? This is a question I've been debating with myself for awhile now and I really don't have an answer.

Take the lowly (at least to some) Hektor 135mm f/4.5 lens. It hasn't been all that long ago when sellers almost gave them away. Discussions on RFF pointed out that the Hektor was a much under-appreciated optic and prices are typically much higher now.

Maybe it's simply a general trend that has nothing to do with RFF but considering the membership and the vast number of guests we attract, I can't help but think that we're impacting the market for Leica gear.

It's very possible. Much like a stock analyst who picks a stock and barks it on TV... the next trading day the stock moves up; and like that same stock, the price will fall. Since most of us require immediate gratification, this tends to raise prices in the short term.

New Leica prices went up on January 1. Its possible there's an effect of all Leica prices tailgating that increase.

an interesting experiment, we should only post positive reviews and images taken with the now affordable Yashica Electro 35, in six months may be they will be selling for 500-600 dollars. We can then cash in on the popularity, invest now 🙂

Not sure about Leica stuff, but I found this to be true for some of Nikon's stuff. Prior to abundance of information and discussions, much of the industrial-typed Nikkors like the Ultra-Micro-Nikkors, Repro-Nikkors, etc... can be had for very little, or even found in dumpsters of many research facilities. But when more and more people talks about them, their prices increased many folds. For example, in the mid 2004, a 55/2 UMN was listed, relisted, etc for $700, noboby touches it. But as the uptake of more affordable DSLR like the D70 increases, many people are aware about the work of say, Bjorn or Akiyama-san via forums like DPReview.com... In 2005, the last 55/2 UMN I know sold for over $2k!!!

For new stuff perhaps not (too much), but for used market ... is possible if you ask me...

i think it's possible we move the used gear market in rangefinders cause most of that market stops by here on a daily basis.

If it is, then the ranting and antisocial behavior on the pnet Leica forum is probably turning people off to Leica at least an equal rate, so the net effect is probably nil 😀

only 3900 members here.. I sure hope the state of the RF market is not that sad - where 3900 people can tilt the market one way or the other...

don't too far ahead of ourselves now. We're not the center of the RF universe..

If you look at my price guides, especially for Leica - you can get a sense if items have really gone up over the past year ( my last updates were Jan 05 )

I think the information posted here at RFF about lenses and cameras has moved prices up.

And when a Heads-Up is posted, prices also move up.

Nikon RF prices have moved down, largely due to the availability of new S3-2000's and even the SP-2005.

If film is dead, why can't I find cameras by the ton at the local throift store???
