So rather than talk me out of it I'm being encouraged to go into debt and buy the newer version...![]()
All the good things people are telling you are true. It's solidly built, it's great in pocket yet has all the toys of larger cameras, it's grain looks like film grain-- a product of Ricoh's in-camera software.. etc. But you want to be talked out of it and I have been there before so.. here we go..
I bought a GRD IV last fall when it came out and before I even bought it I thought.. I could get a new consumer DSLR for this price, what am I doing paying this much for this dinky thing? The fixed focal range-- sure a lot of people like that but when your legs can't get you across the street in time.. you lose the shot. When you can't zoom upwards, you miss all the details of that facade. It can macro, but sorry, no point and shoot does macro like a true macro lens can. Now do you want accessories? They are all ungodly priced too. The leather case that will accommodate the viewfinder.. toss in another hundred. The viewfinder.. two. Of course you can find people selling used ones just like you can the camera, but you can find people selling other used cameras too. I ended up with a Canon G12 for my vacation.. and it did everything I needed for less, still fit in my purse or can fit in a jacket pocket and you can use filters on it. Yea for the polarizer in bright Sydney summer sun. The GRD is a great little camera but there are a lot of other great little cameras that can do a great bit more. Ricoh lovers don't think I'm hating on the camera, I liked it, but the op wants to hear the rest of it...
Now if you want a Canon G12..

That´s good work Kristen, it will keep the prices for used GRD low. All that praising has very negative effects on eb**
Speaking serious, I had never a camera that satisfied my needs so perfectly like my GRDIII.

I agree, no doubt there are lots of potent small cameras out there. But the Ricoh still stand alone as the most comfortable camera that is designed by and for people who love B&W and don't mind being creative with only a wide-angle lens.
As for the price, I paid 225 USD for the IV, with the viewfinder, and two batteries, and the leather case, and an 8GB card. If I can find that deal, anyone can
The only thing I wish is that I can turn off the LCD while shooting. Anyone care to tell me that I'm mistaken in thinking that it can't be done?

@Will: in shooting mode, pressing the display button x4 does it on GRDIII. Good for night street or discreet concert shooting.
(If that does not work on the IV, I'd be happy to trade you my ($300) III. And you can give me $75, too!)

Robert,
That works!
You are cool! I've been trying to find how to do that.
It would be nice if turning off the LCD can be assigned to a Fn button like on my Olympus EP-2.
(300 bucks for a model III is a steal

Haven't tried the later ones but the original GRD is my favorite digital camera ever. Still works fine, six years later. I love shooting at ISO 800, e.g.:

All JPEGs, and then nothing but channel mixer+curves in PS. Never even tried RAW on this camera (never felt the need for it).
Outstanding Vision!

Getting serious GAS for a Ricoh GR Digital. The 1 might be within reach, but is it good enough? DPReview kind of turned me off, but I wouldn't mind using it as a B&W only camera.
How are the other GR's?
Can somebody talk me out of it?
Griffin, I''m a GRD4 lover... Listen, that Ricoh your looking at is the biggest crap of a camera ever designed....
Tell ya what...send it to me and I'll test it out for a year or so...
I'd hate to think of you getting stuck with that junky version of a camera.....
ps...I'll pay shipping....

You people are pure evil.
No less than TWO RFF-ers pretty much immediately offered me their GRD, plus the one I was eyeballing has become available for a very attractive price.
It is VERY difficult to resist... Lack of money, however, is a good motivator.

You know, during the evolution of this conversation, I realized that all Ricoh cameras are tremendously overpriced POSs, and am glad to report that I have taken it upon myself to buy used ones whenever possible to prevent further spendthrift heartache among the cruelly misinformed. Why, just last night I was able to keep a mint GXR from falling into the hands of people better advised to be buying Fuji X, and its $229 price was a small sacrifice in the context of keeping poor ignorant folk from Ricoh's plans for global domination.
I'm not sure what to do with these GR/GX-whatevers, but maybe I'll just add them to my bucket at the golf range when the regular balls run low. And I sincerely advise Griffin not to be fooled by the deceptive pricing! Better to save up for an early Leica X1 that has spent less than 5 minutes in seawater.

The magic is working. Can someone rant on a Leica.. so the prices are lowered for me?

Just tell us which thread to insert our virality into. The fact that all 4 of my Leicas date from 1946-1975 should not prevent me from trying to discourage others from hanging onto their digital Leicas, especially that paragon of mere costume jewelry, the Leica Monotone!

rhl-oregon, your posts are hysterical and the heavens will be raining Leica's shortly.

Dave, I have a new 6wk puppy both adorable and crazy, and the sleep deprivation is convincing me that adopting those two qualities is not the worst thing I can do at age 60. Though I will settle for whimsical hysteria if it helps reduce prices in Ricohland! And you should know that your avatar is totally an enabler for this sort of behavior.
She is about the size of a GW690 but not that heavy. And the only documentation I've done of her so far is with a _____ and a ______. (Bonus points if you don't guess Leica or Fuji.)
Cheers, Robert
