Kenny,
As a 50mm shooter, I was also concerned about the 28mm. But I've grown to enjoy the process of moving closer. And it has taught me to be more attentive to setting because so much more is included.
The one issue for me, because I'm pretty tall, is distortion as I move very close to subjects. So I shoot a lot at chest level.
Like everyone else here, I'm thrilled with the character of the GR BW output. It's not the super sharp or highly resolved aesthetic of some sensors, but rather the rich, organic look that I prefer.

Yeah that is interesting, I have that problem as well even with 35mm on my M9, so I have to crunch down or even almost kneel at times to avoid distortion, but then again in that case I have to look through the finder. I am also a bit sensitive to distortion, one reason I prefer 50mm, but I think I will try to reevaluate that now when I get the GR and see if I can find something in it that I'll like.
I thought long and hard about it (years really), but realized now that I can't really know unless I try one, so fingers crossed, I'll hopefully like it.

60% on Tri-X (Ricoh Gr1v) and 40% digital (Ricoh GR)
That sounds immensely appealing!!!
I have been dancing around the GR without pulling the trigger. In this realm, I have the GRD III, RX-100, and the EOS M. I think I could give them up for the GR, maybe keeping the RX-100 for the zoom. Ugh. Decisions.

How are Ricoh doing with firmware updates? Do they tweak and release updates, or their software works well enough to not warrant that many updates? I mean, do they even do things like release updates that improve things, or they stay strictly to bug fix releases, or none at all?
...
Ricoh was pretty good with the GRD line in introducing firmware updates with new features, so I'm optimistic about them continuing to do so. Indeed, it makes me frustrated that Olympus is the opposite, and hasn't introduced a firmware update to bring focus-peaking to the E-M5.
I'd have to say right now that the GR is my favourite camera. I hope you enjoy yours.

Are GR-people shooting raw and converting to BW in post or using one of the in-camera BW modes?

Gustaf, people are using both.
I tend to crush the blacks and add grain, so I like a clean file to start with...so, RAW for me, and the files are great. On the jpg side of the house, there is a lot of customization with the different b&w in-camera profiles, so some people are just using that.
This probably doesn't help answer your question, does it?

David, sure it does
Thanks for the quick reply!

Gustaf, in fact I use it in mostly JPG. I decide before I start shooting whether I want to get high contrast BW, or color film-like look, or whatever and I use the camera's preset functions for that. This way, in addition to using the camera always between 800 and 3200 ISO (to avoid the ultrasharp digital look I hate), is the closest I get to shooting film (when I don't do that in my GR1v).

Andrea, thanks for sharing your take on this.

Only raw here. In fact, I don't think I ever shot a jpeg.
I enjoy many of the high contrast images I see here and elsewhere, but I'm personally after an extended middle gray range. I love all those rich grays. GR raw files seem to accommodate both approaches very well.

I got to use a friend's copy of this camera. Such great files in such a pleasant package. Extremely quick and light.

So I picked up my GR yesterday night, came home a bit too late to really have time to try it out. Looked at it a bit during the day, slightly overwhelmed by all options, so need to set it up.
But here is one of my very first shots from work today for the fun of it.

^congrats!
one great thing about the Ricoh cameras is that it is customizable, 2 function buttons and a sub-menu that you can put in your 5 most used settings as well.
i printed this as a present to my sister

NYC view from Brooklyn by earl.dieta, on Flickr
taken with the GR, just one shot and cropped to panorama.
20x60 print and still look sharp!

Ironically though, the one customization I really want to so seems I can't figure out - I suspect it is not possible...
I want to auto focus with the AFL button (I got that to work without problems) but at the same time I want to disable auto focus on half press of the shutter, but lock exposure. So basically I want the shutter to act as AEL on half press without trying to focus.
I always set up my DSLRs like that when I had those and with and auto focus camera I prefer it like that.
Also, I thought I read in the manual that it is possible to charge the camera over a USB connection to a computer, did anyone else try that? It seems to me as the camera shuts itself off after a minute or so and the charging status lamp turns off.

ah, you want to use the back focus button on it?
don't think it can but feel free to share if you figure it out.
it's the first thing I search for on an AF camera as well

yes exactly, and more specifically, i want to use it without having to hold it. i can achieve what i want of course either by pressing and holding it while i press the shutter, or by enabling the actual lock feature, but none of them are exactly what i want.
and i must say i find it quite curious that almost everything can be configured, except for the shutter button, which in some cases is one of one of the view things that CAN be configured on other cameras.

The shutter button can be configured... it has many modes (snap, etc.), but I guess just not the one you want. I think we tend to forget that this camera is technically a P&S camera.
