Taking the top plate off is a fairly easy job. There are two screws in the compartment and one (or two, it's been a while so I can't remember clearly) under the leatherette.

Front, if memory serves. The one I worked on has databack on the side so no screw there.
You can always stick it back with ease.

I could be wrong. There might be a screw on the side as well, I suggest u carefully pry some part of the leatherette off to inspect before doing anything big.
