Looks like a crispy contrast monster (which I like). Is this the lens, or do raw files have this look to them as well? Basically curious if the look I see in the camera's images are inherent to the lens/sensor combo or if this is the jpeg engine giving the look.

Also considering a V1. I think I'm seeing much more contrast and saturation in the Ricoh. Any other opinions on this?

I think it's the JPEG engine. When you choose B&W, you have options of regular, or high-contrast (and within that, you can tweak the contrast a bit more).

I have some RAW files here if they'd be of any help.

There are actually 3 B&W settings to choose from: regular, high contrast and b&w (toning effect). You can adjust the contrast on all three settings as well as some various other adjustments, as uniku said above. I have been having fun with the b&w (TE) then bumping up the contrast. I'm walking out the door atm, but I can post some various samples in a bit.

Very helpful information. The raw files at high iso look much better than what I have gotten from a Canon S90.
