Although I have a GXR with M module and lots of M glass, the Ricoh 50 is just about my "go to" lens. It's truly astonishing and never ceases to amaze me. If I had to choose one rig from my GXR, M6 and Nikon S3 gear, it'd have to be the GXR with the 50 macro.

Damien, thanks from me, and I think you'll be pleased with the little S10 as an all purpose zoom (I have the P10, from my original GXR kit purchase; it added an extra $20 to the GXR list, and gives me a tiny tiny travel zoom for family trips). Most importantly, the GXR engine will give you a great deal of flexibility in how you shoot, so when you add lensors/lenses

I don't have the A12 28--I came to the GXR after the GRD, and the GRD covers the 28mm world for me--but the 50 is fabulous, and pretty much stays glued to one body (A12 M lenses on the other).

Thanks Robert, only just saw your reply recently, as it's been a little since checking in on this thread - mostly because I've been busy with my new little GXR since it's arrived!

This really is a little gem of a camera, and have been spending the last few weeks shooting quite a bit, and working out how to get the most from it. I love the b&w this little camera produces, although I feel I will need to work a little more to see if I cannot wring the colour I like out of it.

I'm not sure if I will have much to post, as I think it will be the S10 for me for quite a while, which is proving the perfect personal/ family snapshot/ dear diary camera as I had hoped 🙂

Leaving Japan for me will be the toughest on the last day. Right now, I am giddy with anticipation about going back to Canada. The struggle is for my wife, who leaving friends, family, culture and country behind.

It still feels like summer here. I told here the leaves have fallen back home and winter is fast approaching. She just shook her head in disbelief. She is trying fathom -30C in winter. My kids will love it.

Perhaps we have here the core of your first exhibit in BC, no? We do think of ourselves in Cascadia as living on the Pacific Rim.

I thnk you should send a selection of these portraits to the journal Manoa at the University of Hawaii. That journal publishes good photography as well a poetry, fiction, and critical essays, and all of it is international/Pacific Rim focused. (I published poems there in the past.) Frank Stewart is the editor; Pat Matsueda is the managing editor (http://www.hawaii.edu/mjournal/text/staff/staffpage.html).

Definitely not boring me, Maiku! Beautiful portrait shots of the performers in the festival. In fact your pictures taken with the GXR and this thread convinced me to get a GXR + M mount + A12 50/2,5. Just bought the whole set on Tuesday. I'm hoping to see more photos soon!

Maiku, great stuff. Care to share your post-processing for the portraits - really nicely done.

Sym101 - the 50/2.5 IQ is amazing. AF not so amazing, but still competent.

My post-processing is simple. I use google`s Picasa3. I simply hit the feeling lucky, or contrast option. If I like either one, then I continue on to saturation, sharpening, glow etc. I only make small adjustments. I try to keep simple.

Buying gear is a slippery slope. The 28/2.5 is simply stunning at times. I just bought a second body. It came with the 28-300 zoom. The zoom impresses me. I love the grain the 28-300 produces at 3200 ISO. Vintage in look.

Make sure you upgrade your firm ware so you can take advantage of the scene options on the control dial
