RIP Plus-X

So I've already posted some images but I've finished my last roll of plus-x in 35mm. I have to say I couldn't have gone out with a better roll. Just thought I'd share the images that really are going to make me miss the stuff.

A little backstory. I was asked to shoot my father's truck and was planning on a fuji 690 at golden hour shoot. Ended up losing track of time and the light was far too dark for the film I loaded in the 6x9. I ran back to my bag and pulled out the 35mm and snapped a few quick ones at dusk, within 5 minutes the light had fallen and we were finished. These are my frantic run around shots I managed to quickly snap in that period.

Great shots, cool truck. I came to film photography too late to use plus-x (or Kodachrome), but it looks nice.

Nice Pete! Yeah, I miss Plus-X too, but not enough to shoot up my last roll yet. Maybe when I'm eighty, I'll load up the S2, and give it one last fling.

Lovely shots. plus X really is wonderful. i managed to come into serious photography just in time to shoot several rolls of PX and a single roll of Kodachrome.

PX may be gone but there are tons of good black and white films out there. be not mournful but rejoice!

Plus was the most beautiful film created. Problem is not enough people thought so.

A home darkroom is needed to show off the best properties.

People go for tri x which is a dismal film in my opinion.

I like both. I will be migrating over to tmax for the next brick, 400 not 100. Finding 400 to be a more versatile speed than 100.

I'm glad that the images are liked, I'm quite fond of them myself.

Nice looking Pete your dad has. Love the twin stacks. Shot my last roll years ago. Good stuff I like the Arista EDU 100 & will play around with that. but it's not Plus X though.

Stocked up a few bricks as well as 100ft a year ago. Recently shot about 10 rolls. Fantastic film, even given the fact that I'd shot Acros in the past. Wish I've discovered it earlier.

Wish I had some more, was my favorite film. Now it'seems FP4. Hope Ilford keeps making that for a while.

There's something special about plus-x that I'll miss.

I have one roll left in 120. I'm waiting for a special moment to finish it. But plus-x in 120 vs 35 I find is a completely different beast.

I bought what Adorama said were their last two bricks of 35mm Plus-X a few years ago and have been shooting it sparingly since. Most of what I've shot has been through my Nikon F2 with a 2.1cm lens mounted.

I took most of my film photographs in Fallujah, Iraq on Plus-X back in 2004. I burned through 17 rolls in one day which was a record for me. Yes, yes, I know that is low for some journalists but I was also automatic rifleman 1 in my squad.

These days I shoot TriX and I'm migrating away from 35mm, hoping to concentrate on more contemplative composition with a 4x5.

I found that Tri-X and Plus-X give similar "bitey" tones. I usually turn to Tri-X as an alternative to Plus-X to get that look in terms of tone.

The look changes when you factor in speed difference. I find that images shot at F4 1/1000 in bright sunlight look much different than F8 1/1000 with that difference in DOF. But if you shoot in those conditions where you can match the settings the results are quite similar.

Any opinions/suggestions for the current 35mm film of similar speed closest to Plus-X in appearance, without resorting to exotic developers?

I still have 2 bricks of plus-x in the freezer.

I think fp4 is a good substitute.

Plus-X is and will be my first pick for a resurrected emulsion.
FP4 is a wonderful film unique from Plus-X yet close.
TMax100 in Perceptol 1:0 is very close.
