John McPhee wrote a great non-fiction book, I believe it was "The Pine Barrens", that include a thread about this very subject. There's a character in the book, a park ranger (?), who in his/her travels comes across roadkill quite often. This person would stop at these crime scenes to have a look. If the critter was still fresh, it would be tossed into an ice chest kept in the vehicle just for this person. Saved a trip to the store. 🙄
