Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone knows about and/or has used this lens--the Rollei Planar 80mm 2.8 HFT ltm. It seems to be pretty rare. Online, I have found a few images taken with it (on M bodies)--and they are pretty good.

It's definitely an "odd" focal length for use on an M body, but I'm hoping to get input from any RFF members who may know about this lens and/or have used it.

The lens usually goes for a fair bit more. Grab it before it's gone. I don't think you will lose money of this at baby at all.

I had one for a short while, very big and heavy is my memory of it. It came with a Nikon F mount as well, the lens unit unscrewed from the mount and could go on the F or LTM mount.

Gave images with a unique look, but in the end I just didn't like carrying it around.

There is a longish (for such a rare lens) thread about this lens.

Thanks for reminding me of that thread. I had forgotten that the Rollei Sonnar 40/2.8 in my possession was originally priced at $1200.
 
They are indeed very rare. I was under the impression that they never went into full production and that only a few pre-production samples made it onto the market. I'd get it if I had the money.
 
To be honest, I don't find the 80mm lens large. A bit longer than the 50mm and about the same length as the 75mm, but definitely slimmer.

After a few days of pondering, I nabbed the Rollei 80. I have played with it twice and really like the feel and rendering. More to come per my experiences with this lens. Thanks for all of your input.

I agree in regards to the rollei. I was somewhat concerned about it before getting the lens, but it seems to be a non-factor ... Perhaps because I'm used to the M8 and its imperfect frame lines.

I see what you mean. I don't think the 90/2 AA is too heavy, big maybe. The Rollei (as I recall) was much heavier than it looked.
 
the rollei 80 looks much smaller than the cron 90, but weighs only about five grams less. to be specific, the rollei is 73.5mm long, while the cron is 77.3mm long. the noticeable difference is in circumference, with the rollei using a size 43mm filter and the cron using a 55mm filter. moreover, the cron is from F2-F16, using 11 blades, and the rollei from F2.8-F22, using 10 blades. of course, these cameras are of "somewhat" different focal length, 80 vs. 90.

anyway, it has been fun so far. it's my first used lens for an M body, so it seems like more of an adventure than my previous leica lenses.

Glad to see you finally got the lens. Hope the comments given were helpful. I'm sure over the next few months, you'll see that a lot of the concerns that the 'non owners' raise over this lens are actually exagerrated or non-existent. It's a well made and fun lens. Enjoy your new toy and post some pictures taken with it soon!
