Here's a bit of trivia for you - the gunsight rangefinder used on the Yamato was manufactured by Nippon Kogaku (i.e. Nikon) at the Ohi Factory about 3-4 minutes walk from JR Nishi-Oi Station (that name should ring a bell 😉).　The rangefinder had a base length of 15.5 metres!!!

heh.. I didn't know all this, but saw a video (in Japanese) at museum, it mentioned Nikon and described Yamato's rangefinder system (two images, that can be combined to one). I thought it must be for estimating distances, but could not tell for sure. had English audio guide, but it didn't go this detail 😛

Nikon also made submarine periscopes during the war.

Fantastic series of photos from an extraordinary journey. I wish I had the money to do the same.

Can't help thinking that with a slightly later timing you would have experienced serious trouble in both Egypt and Japan. In other words, Jarski, you have left only rubble in your wake. 😀 Let's hope you leave USA without starting a revolution!

forgot to add link to RFF meet in NYC in February here. been now in Tokyo and NYC meets, both great fun, and am trying to sync calendar with Euro meet in London in May.

well my journey is coming close soon. spent my last RTW ticket and flew from South America back to Europe over a week ago. plan is still stop along the way few places, while heading north east (Finland) where am from. its summer and all. am in London currently.

hi once again! this last post comes hopelessly late as my trip ended few months ago, but here's last section, the European part of trip.

gear wise, while I shuffled lenses a bit, shot mostly with ZM28 and CV75. Leica M8 kept clicking reliably, went to two mountains with me and didnt miss a shot through the trip. now afterwards am surprised how two batteries (barely) was enough for week trip to Kilimanjaro, with cold nights and tons to shoot, without recharge. on whole trip, shutter count difference between first and last keeper is little over 20k, from which I kept perhaps half.
