russian lenses

IIRC the Leica lens to film distance is 51.6mm while the Russian lenses produced after WWII used the Contax standard which is 52.4mm. So lenses are not compatible over their whole focal distance if used wide open. When stopped down to 5.6 and focused from 2.5 meters onwards they are close to the mark, unless you print big.

Brian Sweeney has some posts on website www.ziforums.com that show how to shim those lenses, since at least the Jupiters are really simple to get to the right parts of the lens. Ofcourse, colimation afterwards is where it gets tricky... Goal is to optimise for close focus and wide open, and let increased DOF with increased distance cover focusing errors. Like this, even Jupiter-3 50/1.5 lenses can be made to focus accurately throughout the range.

Oh, and forget about using a pre-war Russian lens to bypass the issue, those were not standardized and each needed to be adjusted to the body anyway...

Yes it is needed on J-12's. I just took my first roll using a Sweeneyized J12 and I was SHOCKED at the results......stunning sharpness and resolution. Makes me look at all my expensive glass and wonder!!
