Interesting and tragic story but the pictures shown in the petapixel article are a very mixed bunch. Some are mere family snaps, including them detracts from the good work IMO. More curatorial effort is needed to hype her up to VM levels, if there are enough great photographs. Shows how important editing is. Which few photographs one selects out of the thousands one makes, decides as what sort of photographer one will be seen.

These are pictures today's B&W (how do I categorize this?) photographers would have made. Not very special except the setting being the USSR I say.

Very cool story. This should not be a competition between Vivian and Masha, but Vivian's photos are much more creative, innovative, the subjects more unique, and the compositions are more compelling.

I agree with the others, while the pictures are a nice glimpse of the USSR era, they just feel like snap shots.
Composition-ally and creatively, I prefer Vivian's photos.

But then I've seen hundreds of pictures by Vivian but only 20 of Masha

To be more clear, to me not all of them seem to be mere snap shots. I think about half of these are great. For example how Ivashintsova captured expression in the some of the portraits is extraordinary. I don't like how they selected. Especially why include the rocket sculpture? In Vivian Maier's case, more of the published photos were great ones. That's what matters, of course she, like everyone else, also made many weak photos. The selection of the images to publish is big part of the photographer's work, with this being published after Ivashintsova's passing, the daughter can make or break the photographer's public image now with her image selection.
Another question is - didn't the negatives degrade, sitting undeveloped so long, in an attic of all places? The self-portrait looks degraded, if that's not from underexposure. Would be interesting to know what the others look like in higher resolution.

The issue of curation of the images in key. Go through all 30,000 images and publish a book of the top 200. Then let's talk.
