S3 2000 Continues to Impress

While thinking about the sad state of affairs with the economy, etc. , my mind drifts back to the S3 2000 I received back in December from Jon. Not only am I impressed with the quality of the instrument and the photos but others are taking notice now that I have a spare case and feel comfortable carrying it in the open with the body and lens exposed for all to see.

If you have not tried your RF with a case, it is really cool to have the camera hanging from your shoulder/neck for instant use...and for the inevitable conversations struck up by onlookers. Everyone is impressed!

Am I getting too retro? 😱😀😉

I could be impressed by using a camera. And doubtless this Nikon reissue is a fine camera and impressive to use.

But I don't care at all to impress people that I'm carrying a particular camera, and thereby striking up conversations with onlookers.

My cameras are for photography, not to impress people.

Fair enough...that is why I USE mine!

I am very private and do not open up to people easily. However, I have met some very interested people which have led to relationships that I never imagined...some photographers, some customers...

So it is with educating people who have never heard of Nikon RF's or anything else RF...we now have a few more converts among us because of those relationships. Can't be bad for our passion, now, could it?

You can hang your camera around your neck/shoulder with a strap, you don't actually need a case. A naked camera, scary I know, but I do this all the time. Mind you, scuffing the S3 reissue would probably suck more than scuffing a 50 year old M2 or a Bessa.

And yeah, I've had lots of conversations with people who see i'm using a film camera and ask me what's up. It's definitely a plus from using odd/old looking cameras.

I also carry mine on a shoulder strap with no case.

The fact is that older film cameras attract attention in a way that they did not five and 10 years ago. Most people assume it's some older SLR.

Whew! Glad you said naked camera rather than camera naked!

I am thinking of a different strap for the long term, though....OT, I suppose, but does anyone have a recommendation for a good strap that would match the case?

I too am looking into different straps...I bought a Y strap (http://figitalrevolution.com/y-strap/) and like it and am curious about the Artisan silk strap even though it's pricey. Anyone use one of those?

And yes, one of the cool things about carrying one of these cameras is the interesting conversations that arise. 🙂

Do you mean the silk cord type Artisan straps? Indeed very pricey! However, after checking them out at MAP Camera several times, I finally succumbed and bought one for my SP. It's a little on the short side compared to what I was using, but its really really comfortable.

All my silk straps were the pre-improvement models without the extra stitching and were made to handle Hasselblads.

Have you heard of any problems with the pre-improvement models, Akira?

I suspect there might have been problems with something heavy like a Hassy or D1X, but something lighter shouldn't be a problem, right?

The Y strap looks good but is apparently an "American knock-off" (how many times have you seen that?) of a German product from Leicagoodies.com (my favorite).

BTW--the inventor, Stephen M. Schaub, says he is a "Hybrid Artist"--what the hell is that?

Yes, I discovered that after I found out about the Y strap (which was reviewed by Reid Reviews.) But I see many more product knock-offs coming out of China. 🙂
