Yes, in the back of my mind I wondered if I should hold off until after the Labor Day weekend before posting this set. In fact, it would have been better to do that.

I was leafing through a photography magazine from August 2000 and found an article announcing the then new S3 2000. It compares it to the vintage S3. Price quoted for a mint vintage S3 in the year 2000 was USD 3,000.
The dealer cost of the new S3 was $ 5,000, and the author of the article reckons it would go for sale at $ 5,500, calculating a 10% margin for the dealer. Also stated is that only 200 would be imported by Nikon USA.
I don't remember how strong the dollar was back in the year 2000, but it does seem a lot of money. Surely we are at a good buying point now in 2012.
The article concludes by saying "The millennium Nikon S3 is undoubtedly a mouth-watering machine intended for well-heeled collectors. If it sells well, who knows, there may be future Nikon rangefinder classics or possibly more S3s."
