Just out of curiosity, why is it important to keep a registry such as this?

For me, there isn't any great importance to contributing to and keeping a camera registry. It's just part of the gathering of bits of information on a camera along with little details regarding the history of the design, or the provenance of the camera itself. I suppose that it is similar to joining an American Motors Gremlin owners club when you get a Gremlin. I don't think many people collect Nikon Millenium S3's but it's nice to join others who own and love them.Just out of curiosity, why is it important to keep a registry such as this?
That said, I find myself often looking at people who collect things and ask "Why would you do that?" IMO there are no profoundly compelling reasons (though perhaps there are many uncompelling reasons) beyond simply "They like to do that".
