Has anybody tried out the newish Canon S95 and can comment on ease of use, picture quality etc? I have seen previews, reviews and videos of it, but would like to hear what real photographers think 😉

Cheers,

More pocketable than LX series, but the lens is a little bit slower at all equivalent focal length settings.
To my eye the images are not as sharp or detailed as LX and the macro is not nearly as good.
But hey, it's smaller and it is a great little camera!

Canon says this camera has more effective IS, as well as a few other tweaks, such as an automatic HDR option. I would buy this, if I already didn't have the S90

I picked one up last weekend. So far I am quite amazed. ISO 1600 is useable (even 3200 in some instances). Super small and compact. The LCD is a pleasure to look at. Image quality and 720p video quality are both good. Shutter lag is about a half second and it powers on really fast (about 1 second).

The last P&S I owned was a Leica D-lux 4 and I like the S95 much more.

Have a S90 (the predecessor) and I love it. It is very easy to use in manual mode. I use the front ring to set aperture and the back ring for shutterspeed and programmed a button for ISO; I have not seen better ergonomics in a smaller package. Image quality is good for a compact.

@Paddy – yep, saw that – a nice review

@Pickett – exactly – size matters ;-)

@Andy – yes it is and with a few tweaks on handling

@Photogdave – didn’t realise about comparable “slowness” – good point

@Dexdog – yeah, the IS really looks very good (nice Avatar btw)

@Joel – thanks for the comparison to the LX4. Have two detailed questions. My LX2 has a tendency to blow out the sky. How is the LX4 on that and the S95 in comparison? And how is the AF speed/precision?

@Andy - 🙂

@Peter – great you like the S90 so much. I had a real issue with the dial/4-way controller, when I tried it in a shop – but that could easily be my bad – also, apparently, the S95 has a stiffer dial

Keep it coming 🙂

I bought mine the day before it came out and took it to central Asia. Shot a ton with it and took a few videos. They're all on my flickr, but I'll post a few here. It's a great camera. For me the best digiPnS, but in the end I didn't need it and sold it.

Several of those were at ISO 800. This is a good camera with unmatched IQ in it's class. These are all also out of camera JPGs on either the Positive Film setting or Vivid setting.

Terrific photos. Getting the color right in low light is a bit of a challenge though. I have the s90, and I don't see any real reason to get the 95. But these are wonderful cameras, and have exceptional image quality.

I have the S90 and has been my travel companion on business trips
