have you ever sold all of your lenses in order to be able to afford one really expensive lens?
would you ever consider doing this?
and fyi, i am not thinking about doing this.

Not yet. I usually just wait until something I want shows up at a price I can afford. I find it difficult to get rid of gear once I have acquired it.
I have thought lately about thinning down to closer to what I am more likey to keep using. Don't seem to be able to get around to it.

Not really sure how that would be a sacrifice .... You wouldn't do it if convinced you come out short, right ?

I've planned to do it many times. I've told my wife countless times that this new [add something appropriate] is actually very cheap because I'm going to sell this and that of what I have and get more cash than I paid for the new gadget.
Yeah right.
Yeah right.

sacrifice the many for the one...

I'm considering selling my v1 35mm Summicron. I don't shoot it a lot after getting the v4 and a summaron (two presently) and its supposed/potential value doesn't help throwing it in the bag to take it along. Problem is, I wouldn't know what to buy instead... hmmm, a quarter of M9 perhaps...

The biggest sacrifice for me was to stop selling. Selling is as much part of GAS as buying. One for many, many for one, it doesn't matter.
Money is money. It's an illusion to have to trade on piece of gear against another for financial reasons. Whatever you buy, buy it because you want/need/can_afford it, not because you are able to by selling other gear.
YMMV.

My M5s need red dots!
To be quite honest... the few times I've sold items it was because I wasn't using them, so I don't sacrifice stuff for the sake of buying other things. It's too painful... and then, what if I miss the item I sold? What if I don't like the item I purchased with the funds from a previous sale?
Nah... it's all too risky.

I had a camera collection with over 200 cameras in it, including IIIa, CL etc Nikon F Apollo sold them all to literally keep the roof over my head, the Victorian house I own needed a roof, or rather a newer roof than the one it had on it, (can't complain the last roof was from 1870), so the cameras went and the lenes too. Any regrets, I miss the Nikon F, the Leica CL with 40/2 and the Pentax LX. Still my house, (three years on), is now warm and dry, and I now own a Canon P with Jupiter 8, 5cm Elmar and 9cm Elmar, plus a Kodak Retina IIa. Life can be swings and roundabouts at times.

No and No. I use several lenses I own on a very regular basis. I simply couldn't sell them just to get one other lens, it would destroy my ability to do my work.

No, b/c I'm not convinced it's worth it, and in any case I doubt I could decide which of my lenses (let alone all of them) to give up. I actually enjoy using the little collection I've built up in the last few years.
I sold a lot of stuff on Ebay several years ago to get my Nikon SP. The SP cost me about $400 out of pocket, made a good profit.
Ebay is no fun anymore, would not do it again, and do not have to do it again.

Well, I am in the middle of doing it right now.
BUT, I'm merely switching systems. Recently bought a ZI with two ZMs and already lusting for more, so I'm cleaning out my EOS stuff which goes unused 95% of the time...
