Sad story

On the last day of my trip to greece I lost all my digital photo's.

Ash

How did that happen and is there a precaution that could be used in the future to prevent that from reoccurring?

Bob

Well it was about 3 or 4 years ago now. I was using a cheap digicam. That's says it all really.

If you want to schedule backups you might need group level backup software. I use Retrospect Workgroup v5.1 from Dantz (I think EMC now owns the product and it's up to v7.x).

I don't know if Retrospect is now owned by EMC but if so, EMC is a top-notch company specialising in storage... the hard disk kind. I work for a large financial corp and we mostly use EMC high-end storage boxes. Those are waaaay overkill for us at home but at least EMC knows what disk storage is.

Hi Peter,

Thanks so much! If you build your own PC's and do consulting, then you certainly have something to say to us. tkluck did an amazing public service act when he shared his loss, by posting this Thread. I realized that I had been neglecting Backup. Ten minutes... that's all it took to copy-paste 954MB of pix to the external hard drive AND make a Backup CD.

Something more valid and reliable than an alarm or gizmo is required... that
will begin the Backup process automatically on schedule. I've copy-pasted your message above; Avner [my Technician] will be here for a session this week.

Cheers, mike
Mike I'd just like to make it clear that I'm not a computer consultant - I just know enough to be able to build my own machines when I have the time. I advise companies on software information architecture - nothing to do with the box at all.

I'm glad my little tale of woe led so many folks down the path of virtue!

The plan now is to convert an aging pc into what amounts to an over grown back up server. Just need to catch a big HD or two on sale and gather up the bits from my own and my son in law's junk boxes. I can fiddle with software while the volume rescanned is still small. That and archive the choice bits to CD.
Here's an interesting back up batch file template:

Plugging along with the scanning. 35mm & 120 negs aren't so bad. It's the darn Minox negs. No holder, have to scan them under a cover glass.

Could have been even worse. I could have dumped my wife's collection of patterns for her embroidery machine. That would have been really ugly...
Yeah, those files will be included, along with downloaded crochet and knitting patterns. (note: a big expensive embroidery-sewing machine covers an awful lot of GAS!)
Actually it was worse. I also lost my music files too. A lot of which I digitized off of vinyl. Still have the records.

exactly. The negs are still there.
Sorry for your lost hours, man. I can understand you. Two years ago i had a hard disk crash and a month of my work on my thesis has been lost. Dumb. I did not back-up before the summer holiday and when I returned after a week, i thought i did. I had to rewrite the stuff. But it was still in my head, more or less.
You still have the negs.
Why don't you "go digital", LOL.

When on the road, I back up my cards to a portable HD every evening and I back up to a laptop. I carry enough cards, so I don't have to reformat them al the time.
At home: backup to external HD and external server. Call me paranoid, but I have never lost a file. But I have lost exposed film when handing them in to the lab, either through mistakes there or through simply - losing them. Exposed (!) film has been stolen from my hotel room....
I can show you hundreds, maybe thousands of old slides from my father, dating back to the fifties and myself as well, unusable due to fungus or chemical changes in the emulsion. At least digital files will be readable for as long as somebody can convert obsolete formats. And that wil be for a long, long time.
