Is there a developer that I can use for both FP4 and HP5. I am dont like alot of grain and am afraid that a compromise between the two might be too much. I would like to try Perceptol, but there is no development time for HP5. Like the idea of Ilfosol or one of the liquid products. Appreciate your thoughts.

I'm running a ton of FP4 and HP5 in HC110 right now- 4x5 and 120 (no 35mm, though) and it all looks pretty good. Times are different, of course, so it can't run together, but the look is pretty consistent.

D-76 and ID-11 are classic choices. A more recent addition to the list of choices is XTOL. I've used both D-76 and XTOL with HP-5 and can recommend them. I've used D-76 with FP-4, and can recommend this combination, though I have not tried XTOL yet with FP-4. No reason to think it wouldn't work though. XTOL seems to have it all: fine grain, inceased film speed, and high sharpness.

To answer your specifically; any developer that will develop FP-4 will also develop HP-5. It is just a matter of adjusting the time and temperature for the specific film. You can get the development itmes and temps from the Massive Development Chart, as recommended above.

Ilfosol-S is a good choice. At the 1+14 dilution, you can develop HP5 and FP4 in the same tank (9 1/2 minutes).
Ilfotec DD-X also works well with both films, but is more expensive.

If you want a really versatile developer that will develop just about anything plus last a long time and isn't expensive, HC-110. I have gravitated toward Rodinal for most 125 or lower speed films and HC-110 for everything else, which in my case is usually tri-x or HP-5. I have not been able to get it right with Rodinal and HP-5.
