Grrr....

My 3-year old Samsung Monitor has become possessed! When left idle or turned off for more than a few minutes, I turn it on and it flashes very fast for minutes! Then it settles down and all is fine until I walk away or turn it off and come back 15 minutes later or even the next day.

Is this a Halloween mode that is just now kicking in or is it dying on me? I cannot afford another monitor, so I am hoping there is some kind of re-set....

Please help!

Hi Dave, sorry to hear that. I just did a brief Google search for "Samsumg monitor flickers on and off" and found this thread, which sounds like your problem. A respondent suggests it's a failing capacitor problem that you can fix yourself if you can use a soldering iron, and includes step by step photos of how to do it for around $20 in parts.
However, the internet being what it is, maybe you should first contact a Samsung service centre to see if it's a known problem as the thread suggests, and see if they have the same diagnosis and repair procedure.
3 years out of consumer electronics? Sad to say, that's becoming commonplace. I've had a number of expensive electronic appliances (including a TV and my B9180 printer) fail just after the warranty expired. Purchase nowadays is more like term rental, with all the payment upfront. Goods might be cheap, but they aren't all built to last.
Sorry to hear of your problem. I hope the above helps.

Hi Dave,
I have just repaired a Samsung BW 206 20 inch monitor which had the same problem. When I turned on the monitor it would flicker for 2-3 mins before settling down. My monitor had two failing capacitors on the power supply card.

I did all of the Googling on this and also studied some soldering tutorials on Youtube which were a big help. Search for something like 'desolder caps'.

I bought my caps locally at Jaycar in Sydney for a total cost of $2.10.

There is a site, www.lcdalternatives.com which sells complete packages of capacitors for a range of monitors / lcd TV's etc.

It's not that difficult a fix. If you don't feel confident maybe you know someone who could replace the caps for you?
