San Francisco: Best area to stay in??

Somehow we ended up with Starbucks vs Hipbaristar coffee house battle?

I do miss when FourBarrel was a lot calmer and I actually had time to chat with staff there, though.

yeah ...

yeah ...

check out those cool glasses!!

Back then, they probably didn't have the G3 and versalab M3, but I wouldn't care, as long as the kids knew how to properly wash their hands, santize cups and utensils between every pour, and monitor their water from a proper RO unit.

I was going to make a similar thread

I was going to make a similar thread

Me and my girlfriend are also visiting San Francisco, we're arriving on 7/29 and staying at the Orchard Hotel. We are attending her brother's wedding at the Drake, this will be my first time in California so I am very excited. I know it's not my thread, but wanted to say I appreciate all the suggestions. I really want to visit the Rayko Photography place and the Musee Mecanique. Who knows I might even hit up the beloved wharf.

Thanks
Tim

Tim that's a nice hotel as it's fairly new and is a "green" hotel. I've recommended that place to out-of-towner's as it's centrally located, clean and safe.

Here's a listing of free or cheap things to do in SF...

Tim- Rayko is only a block from the MOMA museum. The combo makes a nice afternoon.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for all the help, guys! We had to change our schedule a bit and now our stay in SF and will be 2 days but we'll only spend one night there. We ended up booking a room at the Clift which some friends of ours recommended. Location near Union Square may be a bit touristy but whatever. We have a car so we'll make it to the hip parts of town :)

Actually, I could use one more suggestion. What are the best sushi places in SF? I'd like to hear from experts, please. Only the best will do :)

Let me know if you want more :) And, BTW, if you like Sushi, Northern Cal. is where you should enjoy it.

Like I said, I absolutely LOVE Sushi! However, so far my research (i.e. Google search) has led me to believe that the Sushi places in SF, while not bad, are not in the same league as some of the good ones in L.A. and NYC. Feel free to challenge this view, though!

I love high quality Sushi and am prepared to pay a bit more if it's really good. But of course somewhere there's a limit. Apparently there's a Sushi place in NYC that starts at $400 a person and goes up from there. Now that's definitely out of my price range! To think of all the film that money could buy! :)

2 days? I'm not sure it matters so long as you're not in S. SF or otherwise dealing with traffic. It's not like you're going to stay at the hotel 24/7, right?

As a Bay Area native, I can attest to the crappiness of the traffic in recent years. HMB is nice enough so long as you're not into late night city strolls, because it's a drive away. Sausalito is gorgeous and a bit mellower, but close enough to the headlands and bridge that there are a lot of late night photo ops.

North Beach is a nice suggestion.

Should be plenty warm with the Indian summer. Enjoy it. I recommend getting some good beer / sausages / German food near the Haight.

I'll bump this since most people were probably asleep when I wrote the last comment.

Are there any really good Sushi places in SF??

Sushi, huh?

Sushi Zone is good but hard to get seating.

Otro is surprisingly good. Make sure you go when Maki-san is there.

Sakana is good and right in middle of downtown.

Eiji is pretty good, but also hard to get seating. (but again, all good places in SF are)

Oyaji is more of drinking / izakaya centered place, but very authentic Japanese izakaya. Oyaji (meaning old guy) is crazy. :D

Kappou Gomi is NOT a sushi place, but got very very good authentic traditioanl Japanese food. (they have sign saying "no sushi, no combination dinner!")

Tips:
With a few exceptions, you should aim places outside of downtown.
Don't mind silly names much.
But it's good idea avoiding places in China Town and/or named after city/prefecture.

if you make it over to Sausalito, check out Sushi Ran on Caledonia Street. they've won a bunch of michelin awards and everyone around here seems to love them.
i'm a real strict vegetarian so i only eat appetizers there, but my wife loves the sushi. it's not too expensive either.

Maybe NYC sushi has changed in the last 10 years, but I felt it far inferior to West Coast sushi offerings. Fresher, more variety, and better prep for less. Then again, you can get good sushi anywhere if you pay enough. Too bad San Jose is out of your way. Some nice food in *that* Japantown.

Avoid SF Japantown. :p
