I'm going to be Iceland that week Dave, otherwise I'd be tempted.

How about any or all of three days at the end of that week?
Thursday, July 18th/Friday, July 19th/ and Saturday July 20th....I plan on coming down on Thursday and could possibly hang around until Saturday.
That way we don't have to worry about a stressful situation trying to get back home for anything ... just enjoying the end of the week and the weekend!

Calzone--a great book--except for the ending.
Totally great narrative until--well--you know.
Bummer! Worst I've ever read--threw the book away.
Great writing, though.

If I can get a cheap enough hotel, I could stay Fri and Sat, leaving sometime on Sunday. If I take Friday off, I could be there for Supper on Friday.

Paul,
I learned a lot about southern manners, culture and some awful aspects of the Civil War. I could really understand the dilema of the hero where he became tired of all the killing, even though he was really great at it.
Like I said, "We could use some of those southern manners in New York."
Still great story telling from a southern tradition.

Cal--no doubt a great book--except for the ending. Really exposed the horrors of the Civil War--I just wish the hero had gotten a real break after so much hard work--and he came so close. As I said--oh welll...!

Paul,
I'm glad you were well received. I just think that in the south you are more consistent with having good manners all the time.
I'm a New Yorker, so I can say this, what I find highly offensive here is the sense of entitlement of certain people. Some people can have a lot of money, but no class. This sense of entitlement I find very rude.
You are right though, if you ever need help like in "A Streetcar Named Desire" you can always count on the kindness from a perfect stranger.
My avitar comes from after a NYC Meet-Up. Right outside Puck Fair everone decided to sudenly decorate me with cameras like I was a Christmas tree. If anyone ever comes to New York please PM me or look for the Meet-Up thread. We've been meeting once a month for over 4 years.

Hmmm...maybe we can come down on Friday instead of Thursday. Duane, would you possibly be coming in a day or two before the training schedule begin on the 21st?

I live in savannah. where in savannah will you primarily be staying/photographing? the historical downtown area isn’t very big. could easily be covered in a single day if you were so willing. its very easy to do a group photo walk in the city, but even though the locals are jaywalking masters, the metro police always have foot patrol officers for just this alone. be advised though, that june through september, savannah gets a LOT of rain. so while it will likely be hot and humid, you may not get the bright sunny weather you would like.

Thanks for the heads up about the Jaywalking. Really looking forward to embracing southern culture. Here In NYC we have fools reading on IPADS while walking the streets. In July NYC kinda gets hellish with both heat and humidity. Combined with pollution it kills a few people every summer when the air is deemed unhealthy and people are advised to stay indoors. Deaths are reported on the news as being heat related.
I'm wondering how oppressive can the heat be in Savannah? For health reasons I may have to leave New York because in the winter I have to stay indoors other than go to work more or less. For about half a year I kinda am restricted because any cold has ill effects. This is particularly hard on me because I am very-very active, and basically I cant go shooting.

Dave,
Thanks for setting up this thread. Just realize that Lyn and I will be in Savannah for only 5 days Monday through Friday.

as far as ‘southern culture’ is concerned, the modern savannah is actually quite different from what you might expect. SCAD has done a great deal since the 70’s in making Savannah quite progressive in a lot of ways. if you pay close attention you will see this all over savannah. of course a lot of the basics of southern culture still exist, as this is a colonial city. as far as weather, Savannah is sub tropical by classification of I’m not mistaken. during the summer months, the humidity is virtually always 90+ percent. average summer temperatures range between 90-100 degree F. but the high humidity often make it feel 100+ on most days. in other words its damn hot and humid. BUT savannah is a small city in its centre, and very spread out beyond that. so air pollution isn’t a very big problem here most of the time. I rarely ever hear of any severe air pollution warnings in savannah. its hot and humid, but the air is generally very clean.
my only real word of advice, is that if you plan on spending a lot of time downtown, do be aware that petty crime has been on the rise in savannah, especially the heavy tourist prone historic district. theft of car stereos, dash mounted GPS devices, etc. are common prey. bicycles are also common theft, as so many people ride them downtown. however, camera, wallet and other personal property theft is extremely uncommon.

From my research Savannah is a great city. I take note about the crime. It seems that if the prevailing weather is like New York in July but longer I will like it or learn to like it. Because of great love I think my gal will too.
Life in New York is hard and perhaps not really sustainable, but its an exciting place. I lived out in New Mexico for a year and a half. Unlike other New Yorkers I adopted the local culture and their way of life. The land of manana I found enchanting. I left that New York/Yankee attitude back in New York.
