as far as ‘southern culture’ is concerned, the modern savannah is actually quite different from what you might expect. SCAD has done a great deal since the 70’s in making Savannah quite progressive in a lot of ways. if you pay close attention you will see this all over savannah. of course a lot of the basics of southern culture still exist, as this is a colonial city. as far as weather, Savannah is sub tropical by classification of I’m not mistaken. during the summer months, the humidity is virtually always 90+ percent. average summer temperatures range between 90-100 degree F. but the high humidity often make it feel 100+ on most days. in other words its damn hot and humid. BUT savannah is a small city in its centre, and very spread out beyond that. so air pollution isn’t a very big problem here most of the time. I rarely ever hear of any severe air pollution warnings in savannah. its hot and humid, but the air is generally very clean.
my only real word of advice, is that if you plan on spending a lot of time downtown, do be aware that petty crime has been on the rise in savannah, especially the heavy tourist prone historic district. theft of car stereos, dash mounted GPS devices, etc. are common prey. bicycles are also common theft, as so many people ride them downtown. however, camera, wallet and other personal property theft is extremely uncommon.
