ScanMate drum scanner DIY maintenance, troubleshooting, mods

Hamamatsu Germany claims 15 years is optimistic and PMT can be overexposed. Do you know what overexposure is and can it destroy tube?

I think the idea of overexposure, when it comes to PMTs, relates to the amount of light over a period of time, not a instantaneous occurrence.

About the 15 years life, I think it refers to continuous operation equipment. If I understood correctly, PMTs sort of "recovers" when is not in use so the life of the tube is substantially longer if the device operates intermittently, like a scanner, rather than a radar. In other words, the expected life of a PMT in a device which is operating 12 hours a day compared to 24 hours not only doubles, it is in fact many times longer.

Also, as the document reads, the MTBF of between 1000 and 10000 hours is while operating at the extreme conditions. On a more common environment/scenario the number is expected to be 400 times bigger.

Now, talking about scanners. The designs are so different. I am sure the temperature surrounding the PMTs, the size and use of the apertures, the speed, the light source type and power, electronics, etc. makes the PMTs in one scanner to last more than in others operating for the same number of hours.

A simple example that comes to mind is the way the auto adjustment works in the Howteks scanners, allowing a (technically speaking) bad PMT to still operate. To my knowledge, it's quite different in the Scanmates.

Understanding this, I think, is important because owners/users can extend the life of the equipment making sure it is operating on the cool side, rather than in a warm environment (remember that "noisy" fan?), filtering that extra IR and UV light coming from the lamp (IR-UV filter, anybody?), having the scanner ON only when is being used, etc.

Thank you for the information Armando and Jack. For what it is worth, both scanners produce identical and phenomenal scans so besides the POT gain adjustment, I really can't tell any difference :)

I have 4 of these scanners (2 of 11K and 2 of 5K) and all are more than 15 years old and they all produce identical and perfect scans. BTW, in case you are wondering why 4, I have one setup and one as a backup for parts/emergencies which in the long run is much cheaper than hunting down individual parts or repair.

Pali, now that you are talking about spares, would you mind write down the part numbers of the Altera chips used in the boards of the scanmates next time you open them? If the security bit in those chips is not set then we can make backup copies.

Will be happy to. BTW, someone has a high-resolution photo of the board and I wonder if this has the information you are looking for. See link below:

Maybe someone can help me. I've been running Colorquartet V5.2 on a XP PC for a number of year but the computer is giving me problems so I thought I would upgrade the motherboard. The problem is new motherboards do not have parallel connectors so how and where do I connect the the parallel dongle?
Thanks,
Gale

I have CQ5.2 with SCSI dongle for PC if you are interested, i can sell it.

I would no worry Mr Gale. You have more than one option. The easiest is to check the motherboard itself (not the back) for some pins connectors. Most of the manufacturers left the serial and parallel ports on the board but you need to get the cables with the DB25, sometimes included in the box.

Another option is to buy a card or adapter with the port, either via PCIXXX or USB.

The only potential road block I can think of is the code handling the dongle. Many times they use low level calls directly to the BIOS, bypassing the OS.

Do you have the motherboard model handy?

Thank you very much for replying and sorry for the slow response. I posted the question then got busy with other issues.
I didn't realize MB manufactures sometimes left the parallel ports on the board. I haven't bought a board yet but that is one thing I'll look for.
Years ago I bought a parallel card for another computer but it didn't see the dongle for some unknown reason. I'll let you know how it works out.
Thanks again,
Mr.Gale

Hello everyone. I have a problem with colorperfect i dont know how to solve. With some scans, i think especially with the ones that have a lot of white, i get a very colored (usually red) image when i start color perfect and dont allow me to do auto color correction (the grey point) and it interprets it like very underexposed or something. I scan tiff 16 git rgb (it assigns srgb). After I open it in photoshop, convert to adobe rgb and open in colorperfect. Any idea? In general i have noticed that lately perfectly exposed negs are interpreted by the plugin as 2 or 3 stops underexposed.

Looks like you've got some settings saved and carried over to the next image.

Undo everything, press '<<' button (top left), select correct input in 'Start'.

Pressing 'Initial>Previous' button until you get to 'Fresh Start>...' should get you a fresh inversion of the negative.

I downloaded your scan and it inverted easily without any colour cast what so ever. It seems like your problem is not hardware related! That should be good news :)

Btw, what settings did you use for the scan? Any sharpening in CQ?

Ok. So it is some problem with my colorperfect or who knows what. I tried uninstalling it and installing it back, but it looks that leaves something into photoshop. I didnt have to register it again and it keep the last film profile i used. Someone has an idea for me?

You can download the scan in this link:

I think something went wrong during the scanning or something. It has done it before. If it works in your version then there is something going on with my colorperfect...
Afer this scan i did two more, and both of them behave normally in colorperfect.
Best: David

Scan quality is poor, but I can properly restore the colors.

The ScanMate 5000 datasheet says that the dimensions of the scanner are 840 x 410 x 340 mm (wxhxd). Can someone confirm these measurements?

Hello
i bought a while ago my ScanMate 11000. Now i tried to scan a 16 bit negative without conversion in CQ 5.0 .
The File Format is Tiff RGB 16bit. The negative is a 6x4,5 color negative and i tried to scan in the highest resolution 11000.
I have read here that there is a bug so that i can use only 10500 pixel per line.

So i have tried to scan in slices with a maximum of 20 mm vertically.
But after some time, i think around 60% i got an error.

Error no 1847 DtoNormalizestream - SVRead FileProcfailure.

if i scan the slice horizontally the error would not appear but my images where damaged because of the bug.

Does anybody know this problem.

Thanks
