ScanMate 11000 - Stripes across the sky

Hi,

Does anyone know what causes these stripes on my ScanMate 11000 (see attachment)?

To make these particular stripes visible on this image I needed to adjust the luminance significantly in post process. However, Ive seen them more evident on a few other scans. It is not consistent though... at least not as far as I can tell.

From what I gathered reading this thread and others, this would be caused by uneven illumination, which can result from a bad lamp, dirty lamp contacts and or dirty lamp socket contacts. I replaced the lamp, sockets, and wires which I described a little farther up in this thread. Good luck.

OK, now I can be sure that it is not:
(1) the SCSI cable. i tried out another one that is working on my Flextight scanner, so the cable is okay.
(2) I removed the fuse close to the power connector, and put it in again.
(3) I switched the SCSI ID switch up and down.

All of this without result, the scanner is not scanning. It is found while starting the computer, I can connect to it via CQ Scan and ColorQuartet, when i start pressing preview, the drum gets moved in - and then the same error.

Do you have any other ideas how to solve this problem?

Which other fuses should be checked?

I tried around a few more times, and once I got a different error message ( read data error row 0 stripsize 18), but the next few times it was back to the error described above, that the scanner lost its connection to the computer. Slowly starting to get desperate about the thing .. Any ideas what still could be done? I have to say my electronics skills are non existent also.
 
I think you need to multiply each value by 4 to go from 14 Bit to 16 Bit. Try this command instead that I played with a long time ago.

magick convert Raw16.tif -color-matrix 4,0,0,0,4,0,0,0,4 Raw16-Converted.tif

Still I recommend using contact cleaner on both ends on both sides before connecting before you go into more "serious" stuff, maybe the cable works but [one of the contacts on-] the connector does not.

The more "serious" stuff I could think of:

- inside the main rear compartment there are additional fuses, but you need to take off the rear lid to get to them, check that those all give good continuity and are fine

- with contact cleaner re-seat all the boards in the rear compartment and all the connectors you find inside the scanner (contact cleaner has done wonders in my case since we're dealing with 15+ years old electronics where oxide layers are starting to build up between the tiny contacts)

- one thing I could think there is the drum chassis slider beginning- or end switches, where the rail starts it switches off the beginning, or at the end when it bumps the end switch, is faulty or dirty with grease. Maybe this doesn't work so the drum goes off, but get's no answer from the switch and thus it gives this error after the drum takes off(?) So it doesn't register the drum slider position. Just a very remote theory looking at it from the distance without being able to observe it.

- power box is weak (works but doesn't give enough voltage/amperage for the requred operation once the drum spinning is fired up), check if all the electrolytic caps are fine, clean the powerbox throughout. (There used to be a company who could fully rebuild this particular powerbox, but I've lost contact)

- faulty logic board. (Worst case) When visually nothing is wrong (i.e. blown electrolytic capacitors) this can be PITA to do the diagnostic, but an experienced electronics [boards-] specialist maybe through experience or just luck will find a faulty spot tracking the signal with oscilloscope

Just me 2c.

While waiting for the contact cleaner to arrive, I changed my troubleshooting routine a tad, and all of a sudden it worked. Sa´´

What I did different was: When the scanner got stuck, I turned it off and on again. But I did NOT do the same for the computer. When returning to ColorQuartet, I could scan as intended. It's weird, since I did not change anything, but nevertheless I'm happy that it got resolved, now it's time to properly learn CQ!

Edit update: it still works, but I need to turn it once off and on again when the computer is running. It's strange.

After a few days of scanning, I got now the basics. However, I cannot select RAW as file option. Any idea why that is? I run CQ 5.2. Thank you!
 
By the way, is there still a company in Europe that is servicing these scanners? I don't need it right now, but it would be interesting to find out.
 
Hi! I had the opportunity to buy a ScanMate 11000 and I already managed to make some scans which look stunning! And the post #8 was a great help, especially the part with the 64 kB limit. I would never ever have found out...

I have two problems, though:

1. White point calibration fails, no matter what I try. Empty drum, different sample sizes... The white balance looks good though, so for now I can scan without white point calibration. But I think I need the white point calibration to solve my second problem, which is:

2. Most of times, the preview is completely overexposed, I can see only white and the black tapes or very dark parts of my transparents. Strange thing is, when I select a region and make a scan (TIFF 16bit), the scan looks perfect. I'm sure I'm missing something to configure right. Other strange thing: I somehow managed twice to get a normal looking preview, but I don't know how and why.

Can someone help me? by the way, it's on a Mac Os 9.2 with CQ4.4.2.
 
I think I solved my 2nd problem: it seems the overview of CQ does not like black tape on the drum. The problem does not occur when using transparent tape.

is there a hack for the ColorQuartet dongle?

I'm running my ScanMate 11K on a Mac G4 quicksilver
it was working great with CQ 5.2
downloaded from abc-scan (thanks!, sorry we lost you)
but my trial period has ended :-(

back to using ColorTrio, which is good, but want CQ back

I do have CQ v3.3.2 with an ADB dongle working fairly well on a Mac G3, although much slower

Is there any way to keep a trial version of CQ 5.2 working without a dongle on my G4?

or could I adapt an ADB dongle to USB?

No but you can change to windows and run QC without a dongle using "run as date" and, the windows version will get you 16bit raw if that matters.

I have the oportunity to buy a ScanMate 11000 or Tango Heidelberg? Wich do you think it's better? To scan primarly slides 135, 120 and 4x5

There's another bug in ColorQuartet 4.4.2: When I choose TIF Grayscale 16 bit, the output gets completely scrambled. I have to take TIFF RGB 16 bit and convert to grayscale later. It seems in the 90's people did not scan in 16 bit so much... 🙂

strange thing is when calibrating white, it says it failed, but there is still something calibrated. If I calibrate on the negative "white", i get a much better distribution of the values in the 16 bit TIF.
 
Hi, I bought a scanmate 5000 and it is working whit Color Trio (8bit).
Could somebody help me getting CQ for 16 bit scan?

Does anyone know where do I can find color quartet win version to use it "run as date"? someone could please give some advice?
