I believe that the generally agreed upon solution is to put a piece of anti-newton ring glass on top of the film to "flatten" the arched negative. Are there alternative solutions? What should the thickness of the anr glass be for optimal scan quality while having sufficent weight to push down the film?

Additionally, what isn't clear to me is whether the v500 holder should or needs to be used. Can you get equally good results with the film directly on the platen glass of the scanner with the anr glass on top versus raising the film the 1mm or so above the platen glass with the holder? I understand there may be a focusing sweet spot.

Put them in a plastic sleeve then under a book for 48 hours.

I guess the focus point is wrong if directly on the glass.

You might just run a test and see if the depth of focus is great enough so that the displacement doesn't actually effect the resolution.

Perhaps a tilted transparent ruler or the like might give you such a measurement.
