sell me on the Hasselblad 80mm f2.8 planar

Wayne, thanks a ton for all the links. Very helpful.

well, regarding the hamburger example... i would go for the ribeye 😛
But hey, if you're happy with some hamburger stuff, go for it...make the best out of it.

Ever had a properly grilled wagyu burger on a bun you made yourself topped with just a nice slice of pepperjack?

I'm all for a nice steak but I'll take a good burger over that, and a steak done au poivre over either.

well, minutiae like this is boring to most but helpful to those who care for it.

your pictures push me towards the Pentax. Your point about MFD is well taken, I think I will be getting the slower 75 and the 105 to start, and I will swap out the 75 if I feel it's too close to the 105. I think .7 meters with that FOV will do OK.

I think the dirty little secret of medium format is that the bump in quality comes from moving up from 35mm. So your Yashica or Mamiya C220 images are going to be more different from 35 than they will be from pix taken with a Hassie or a Rollei. I think that is why folks respond with a "camera handling" answer rather than a "this lens is gold and that lens is lead" answer. For years I could only afford a 500C with its chrome 80/2.8 and I loved it. Even though the drop in MF film gear prices has allowed me to amass a stunning collection of soon-to-be-obsolete photo gear, I still have that camera. Just can't sell the thing.

Fascinating topic! My answer is very opinionated and no scientific tests. I used various cameras and lenses, learning about them, by usage.
I had a Pentax 6x7, 75mm, 135mm-Macro. I've used Hassies on assignment but hated the loading. The Pentax is literally straight forward. Film stays in a straight line like the Mamiya C Twin lenses that i used in fashion, magazine and some photojournalism. I only have the Rollei Automat now!
I never liked the 80mm Planar compared to the Rollei TLR Planar. The extra blades in the diaphragm, gave a nicer look.
The Pentax is a monster in size, weight and usage. Flash can almost be ruled out in life, or at a function where there other strong lights(video-photographer). The Hasselblad way more compact.
You should rent, borrow each of these cameras for a day or two, pumping film thru. Seeing what works and what doesn't.
On paper and in my mind(read=idiot) the Pentax seemed ideal, a big SLR, a rectangular image, use of pentaprism immediately, for right way round images. OK?
Everyone of those features i hated! I used the camera on and off for over 20 years, before throwing in the towel, trading it at Samy's in LA., towards a Leica M6.
In one month i am sure i shot more images with my Leica M6TTl than in years with the Pentax.
One last if you go with Pentax, after the 105 or 135, consider the 55mm rather than the 75mm.
Let us all know what you finally get! Good luck.
They are both fine cameras. The Hassies needed more care in usage. The Pentax never had a service, ever. Batteries must be fresh.

A few Hassy 80/2.8 samples...

Bottom line, you'll never know if you'll like a lens until you shoot that lens. It's got to fit you and your style of shooting, hell I shoot portraits with the 50/4! I'm pretty sure if you buy it and don't like it you can re-sell it, no? Life is too short to muddle over such intricacies, buy it, use it, then decide.

Nice ones. I shoot portraits with the 50mm, too.

I think it is a very good lens, although I ended up using more the 100/3.5 on the Hassy and 80/2.8 on the Rolleiflex.

As a comparison, a few with the 100/3.5 Planar. This lens is perfection...

I was going to order a P67 and 105/2.4 today but KEH un-marked down the prices. Oh well, someone bought my rokkor so once theyre happy and I see KEH mark them down again Ill just buy that and a late 55/4.

what sealed it for me was going through a ton of MF shots and when I saw certain pictures I just thought "105" and while Im sure I missed some out of over 200 pictures I looked through I didn't guess wrong a single time I bothered to guess.

can anyone tell me what size tripod hole the 67 and 6x7MLU bodies use? I have a heavier tripod for my Sinar which uses a bigger size than my 35mm cameras do and I was hoping to use that without having to buy a head or plate.

My 6x7MLU has the larger standard tripod socket. For what it's worth, you definitely want the MLU if you're doing any tripod work.

KEH did the weekend markdown two weeks in a row, so you might get lucky next weekend.

I believe my 67 had the large socket hole as well. It really is a dynamite combo and the 105 is certainly my favorite 67 lens. All but three shots in my flickr were taken with my 67ii and 105, a few with a #1 extension tube as well. I will say be careful when buying your 105 from KEH as I just bought a second copy the day before I went on tour with my friends band and it was noticeably yellowed due to the thorium element of which KEH made no mention. With no time to return it I just used it anyhow. It worked just like a K2 filter for my BW stuff which was great but some of my color shots need a little color correction at the lab. I believe it was only the first version of the lens which had Thorium meaning both the S-M-C Takumar 6X7 105mm f/2.4 and the SMC Pentax 67 105mm f2.4 should be free of the lens yellowing problem while the Super-Takumar/6x7 version is susceptible. Although you can UV the yellow out it, it's much easier to buy a clear one first 😀

My 6x7 MLU body has a standard 1/4" tripod socket. It takes RRS quick release plates which also work on all of my 35mm cameras. Therefore, it is 1/4".
Saturday morning I saw that KEH had 1 late 55/4.0 for under $190. I asked the Minister of Finance for an early Christmas present. My request was vetoed. Shucks.

interesting, I just bought a late 55/4 bgn for 150 from them.

now to wait for a body and the 105 to get marked down and Ill have everything I need.

Have fun!

KEH online listings always has been interesting. This is the lens that I didn't buy last Saturday on sale for ~$190. Today it is back to $215 w/caps in EX condition.

I appear to have a body.

Now to wait for a markdown on a 105.

I will try this camera out. If it doesn't work out then I'll just get a rolleiflex. I wish I could have rented one first, but where in Ft. Worth would I ever be able to find film gear for rent?
