Sentimental M

Halo Jonathan.

Rasa dan pengalaman moto dengan Leica M emang beda, setiap aspek kita yang menentukan.
Selamat senang2 dengan mainan barunya.

@maddoc: Doc, I have uploaded some more pics in the first post, please have a look if it is #4008 or else. BTW thanks for the invitation to group, I have joined the group and followed you on flickr. Cheers!

@burancap: We think alike it seems. Thanks for the warm welcome and enjoy your M4-P too. 😉

@jsrockit: Thank you, indeed it feels great and I know my photos will improve. 😛😛

@zuiko85: Yeah totally true! I have to re-dye two of my jeans, resole my boots, wear/service/reuse everything twice so I can save money for this beauty. Now it all paid off.

@Jerevan: Thanks for the reference, I did try to look but the classified has expired.

@summar: Yum! I am not a purist, I have a 40 Nokton which is currently being CLA'd for squeaky focus, but should be back soon. Looks like many are happy with their wide angle Voigtlanders. Thank you for the recommendation.

@hepcat: Thank you for the story and inspiration! 🙂

@Tom A: Tom, thanks for that! I feel really confident and even more so now. Truly a testament to the build quality and service life of (Canadian) Leica. The numbers you mentioned easily goes around 500.000 shutter actuations!

@Ljos: Thank you Ljos, and the connection is indeed awesome.

@nlubis: Pak Lubis, terima kasih, senang bisa jumpa Bapak di forum ini. Salam kenal! 😀

Have you lenses for your camera? Cosina Voigtlander offers numerous excellent options in both M and adapted LTM mounts. If you are just breaking into the world of Leica, perhaps stay true to the linage and choose a Leica/Leitz lens for your first lens for your first M camera.
Yes I have a humble Nokton 40 to go with the camera. I fell in love with a Summaron but I figured I'd go with fresh modern optics first and take it from there. 😉

Jonathan,

Another M4-P user here.
Over these past years, I noticed that people who seriously want to *use* a Leica M, but has the other side of the brain set to "thrifty" gravitate towards the M4-P.

And why not? It's as simple and reliable as it can be, with Leica-quality rangefinder to boot! After 7 years, mine is still the only Leica I need, and it still sports the same Ultron 35/1.7.

Plus yours is extra special, I've never seen a silver M4-P before, it's good lookin' 🙂

Hai Jonathan

Enjoy your M4-P

M4-P menurut saya adalah Leica M film yang affordable pragmatis dan lengkap
Lain kali kalau saya melihat ada orang pake M4-P silver di jalanan , coba manggil ah.. 🙂

I think that would be you 🙂

That is one of the most beautiful Leicas. I hadn't ever seen a chrome version of the M4-P. I like that it doesn't have the red dot.

Some formal portraits of the camera:

Hi Will, thanks for stopping by. That's me all right, I am a thrifty guy, and I am happy I made this decision. Your and others' stories about M4-P's reliability really made me feel confident about this camera. Regarding the finish, it was produced in smaller number than black chrome, and the 70th Anniversary was released in 2.500 pieces, 500 to each letter in the word LEICA. Mine is I067. Thanks again Will! 😀

Hi, we have another Will! I have seen your posts over on Steve Huff and I love 'em. Where do you live man? Coba panggil, kalau salah juga nggak masalah, akan ngobrol soal Leica juga hehehe..

Thank you for your kind words. 🙂

I suddenly feel a sense of calm coming into this post from the Sony A7 one 🙂
Nice looking camera!
LOL they give different kind of calmness to different people. I guess we are in the same group. 😛

I've posted this photo of my Leica M4-Ps before:

sml_U2246I1303889471.SEQ.0.jpg

The camera in the background is still in use with 75mm Summilux and ML-grip as shown. I've added a Leica 1.4x magnifier to aid focus accuracy with the 75mm Summilux.

The camera in the forground was sold for a lot of money to someone who just loved the brassed look of it. I used that cash to buy another, less used-looking, M4-P and have now mated that with a pre-ASPH 35mm Summilux in place of the Summicron shown.

Mandler Heaven, baby!

Finally I can run some test shot! First ones are my lovable four legged friends around the house, nothing to be proud of but I know my kit is working well. 🙂

Jonathan,
Enjoy that camera! It used to be mine!

I bought it in non-working condition from a friend and had Youxin Ye do a complete rebuild and finder modification for me. He recovered it with Aki Asahi leather as the old vulcanite was loose all over and flaking off in places. The red dot was removed as it had a nasty dented crease in it and replacing it with another was cost prohibitive plus it didn't really need to be there.

As the shutter chassis was basically worn out on the camera, he swapped it with an M4a chassis that was almost new but in doing so, he had to use a different shoe so the original serial number doesn't appear on the body. Also the flash function in the hotshoe was deleted and basically the camera became like an M4. I have the serial number if you want it.

The old M4-P backdoor was ratty and the vulcanite had flaked off a bit. The film reminder thing that you could pencil on was no longer clean enough to be used and so Youxin used an M2 back door and matched the covering to the body with Aki Asahi leather.

The winder lever was also replaced with an M2 type of lever since the plastic tip on the old one had broken off before I bought the camera.

That was the nicest Leica finder I ever looked through before or since, I think.
I had intended on keeping it forever but I had stars in my eyes and so it went to Anders.

PM me if you have any questions about it and enjoy that very special camera.

You'll like shooting with the M4-P, jwicaksana. I have one that's been used heavily through the years, lots of brassing but still working perfectly. My favorite 35mm camera.

Phil, thank you for stopping by. I truly feel it is a very special camera, and the mods done on it is JUST the way I wanted my M to be. I even ran a trial a la carte design on Leica website, and I use the same options like no 135 finder and old style advance lever. The backdoor is lovely and the absence of red dot (and self timer by default) made it one of the cleanest Leica I have personally seen.
Looks like I have a strong affection for 'Plain Jane' 😛
Is it alright to post the serial number here? Thanks a lot Phil and have a great weekend ahead.

Thank you kind Sir. Enjoy yours in good health. 🙂

The M4-P is a wonderful camera. I've been using one for many years...
Same here. The M4-P is an M camera you just can't go wrong with. I have read more than a few commentators say it is considered to be the most durable and reliable of the M bodies.

My M4-P is the black chrome version, and I hope to add a chrome model to my M kit to keep it company before too much longer.
