Good starting point, Mr Marquez!

Which lens do you use? And become a little more brave, open the aperture a little more - if possible. Then you have more contrast between the two girls and the background, and it will become more clearly the difference between sunglasses and open eyes - and which one you would invite for dinner ;-)

Enjoy your R-D1!

Cheers, Andreas

I only have a Canon 35mm / 2.8

Already trying lens wide open and forcing the ISO to 1600 to see what happens and I can't believe my eyes. This camera performs great! this is a JPEG straight from camera from today's session at the birthday of a friend. The only downside I see is that the battery doesn't last so long though.

...seems that you are getting it fast.
Much better than the the "sunglass girls", in my opinion. More "statement", know what I mean.
And the Canon lens is a very good gear to start with. You should dig eBay for a Jupiter 3 (50mm/1.5), plus the M39/M-adapter it will be below 100 EUR. Then you have a short tele for portraits. A good and sensible gear for making first steps into the wonderful world of rangefinder photography!

Cheers,

Andreas

Wow Joe - the architectural shot is wonderful!
The sitting bird gives is the cherry on the pie on top in my opinion, making it that much more interesting, to transfer it from a life form less "still" to an even more interesting "scene"!

These B&W also show the wonderful character of the R-D1 images!
This night, I developed a batch of low light shots of a nude model, I took parallel with R-D1 + 35mm Summaron, M8.2 + 35 Lux A and Nikon D3 + 50 1.4 AF-S.

The Nikon files are very clean, although I shot deliberately at ISO6400, to get some grain - almost clinical look, if you look deeper.
The Leica files do have more sharpness and acuity with a higher resolution, making very big prints technical possible.
The R-D1 files though shine with (can't find the right word) a dense compactness, showing (subjectively felt) smoother tone transitions and a therefore more alive looking image.

Even after giving each cameras images my development - more or less evening big differences out, I can spot, which camera took which photograph after printing them.

You are right on, not giving up on the wonderful R-D1 Joe!

Guys, what a nice gallery of wonderful shots - each one is saying, begging, if not cryin': "Go to the next airport, buy a ticket, discover the world, and don't forget your R-D1"

I can't, because I have to finish some jobs at home - but when sitting on the balcony tonight, I became eye witness of the "Return of he body snatchers (small version)":

Heh, I agree Andreas. Unfortunately I'm flat broke at the moment (more then usual). I'll settle for staying close to home and archive some of the local culture for the next few months 😉
