Shooting Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

Thanks guys! I appreciate the information. I'm not sure if I want to commit to 400 feet yet, especially with some other unused bulk stock in the freezer, so I'll probably try my luck with Film Emporium. That price on fresh stock really is pretty good; if I like it as much as I expect I'll probably end up there eventually. :)

i too think i will try 100' from film emporium... i do not have the ability to deal with 400'. if someone on the board wants to roll 100' for me i would be down!

Interesting thread. Sorry for not reading the entire thread since it's long, I just want to give this film a try myself: this might seem to be a source of good, and very cheap film.

I'd like to give 20 feet of this a try at Film Emporium: "[FONT=arial, helvetica]Kodak DOUBLE-X B&W Negative Film 5222, Short Ends $0.18/ft.

". How long would their short/medium ends be appr.?

Teus,
To answer your question, their inventory depends on whatever odds-n-ends are turned into them for resale, by cine film crews. So it is the luck of the draw. I bought a "long end" 5222 from a cine guy on Ebay, located in Hollywood, Florida. It is 290 feet of film, there are also "short ends" which of course can vary in length. It's whatever they did not use up in their Cine Cameras and Film Magazines, and sell back, to Film Emporium.

i called film emporium and it looks like obtaining short ends is going to be difficult, it has a few hour turnaround...

would anyone with a 400' roll be down to sell 100'?

it would be cool if someone regularly offered 100' rolls in the classified...

I am planning to use my 12mm f5.6 Cosina Voigtlander on my M2 this weekend, with the double shoe, and Voigtlander bubble level. That will be interesting, I haven't used it much, it excels exaggerating near/far vistas, but it will really excel, with XX :D

Here is what I'm using this weekend w/XX. What are y'all using??

I might shoot some 5222 rated at 400 in the M2, OM, or maybe (cough) ETRS, but I'm still waiting on a can of Acufine replenisher. No more developing until that arrives :(

Cosmonot,

From whom did you order your Acufine Replenisher? I have a gallon of the developer powder to mix up, myself. I've been holding off, like you, probably because it -needs- replenishment. :D

Pretty Easter Flower and the Kodal yellow suits the season.

fyi, for all the people afraid to download from 400 foot loads, you should probably be looking for 60 or 70 foot recans as 35mm cores in movieland are much larger than what you guys are used to getting on say, 100 feet of tri-x, about four times as large. 100 feet of film on a standard core wont fit into most bulk loaders, so you have to download it anyway. Its really not a big deal though, if you are going to use this emulsion you might as well jump in with both feet.

Also, the odds of finding a 20 ft recan are likely between slim and none, thats not worth an AC's time to recan, Ive regularly seen lengths of film longer than that on the floor of the darkroom in camera trailers over the years.

I would have gone with B&H, since their standard shipping to here is dang near overnight, but it appears they can't (or won't) ship these powders via their standard carrier.

Oh well, I can wait...

Mixed up 2000ml of TD-201 "A&B" this evening. Looking forward to using it soon, since it appears it will soup just about anything. Full emulsion speed and excellent midtones and high values from just about every conceivable film.

Do you agitate for the entire three minutes with the "A"? What is the procedure that works best with this developer?

Be sure that you filter it with each batch you run. I just did some Neopan 400,Acros 100 and XX (as well as a miserable roll of Rollei Retro!). I have run 20 rolls through this batch (run 4) and the Acros in particular picked up a lot of "crap" on it.
Today was really the first day I was allowed out after the antibiotics had "worn" off. Great fun to shoot anything else instead of the cat or boxes of film for testing.
In another week or so I might spool up my +X too - that should ensure continious rain for some time!

You guys are sure making me have an itch to try this film. :)

I've made arrangements with Tom to get a can (filmemporium never seems to have it in stock when I email them, and I've emailed them about four times over a couple of years - I'm starting to think that they don't like me :) ) but I won't be getting it until May.

I think it will be interesting. I'm really eager to try this film in PMK.

Jim, I can of course ship you a can, but I dont know if Canada Post X-rays stuff that goes through general mail.
For May I will try to spool up some XX in regular 35 cartridges so that you have something to shoot with while in Vancouver. Nothing worse than having 400 ft of film and not being able to use it NOW! I have some stuff with XX that dates back to the early 90's done in Pyro. Looks like it holds the speed pretty well. though I could not see much difference in grain/sharpness compared to the current stuff done on ADOX MQ or Td 201.

PMK is absolutely my favorite all-time Developer

I have(so far) shot one roll of XX today, shooting M2 in the kitchen 1/30 F1.2 Canon. The Rapidwinder is working flawlessly. I filtered both bottles of TD-201, the "A" is quite milky-sulphite saturated, needed filtering. The "B" is gin-clear, although it appeared to have suspended crap in it, so I filtered it as well. It takes a half-hour to filter the "A" solution as it tends to clog the filter. I will make another 2000ml film run probably later today, with the ADOX Borax MQ, which also needs filtering, it's (again) got a deposit of black-crap in the bottom , so I filter it -right before- the run. This time it's a evil 120 roll of German Ortho MACO film, a evil 120 roll of Agfa 100, and four rolls of XX .
Two of the four XX rolls are from the cans I received recently, and want to "test". I'm sure they're fine. BTW factory-fresh XX has a plastic tape "pull-tab" which you simply "pull" to "start" the roll.
