Should I sell my M3 for a Leica iii black paint?

Honestly, I wouldn't sell any running M for any running Non-M.

But hey, do what you want. I'd say you're right to save up and get it, that way if you end up not liking actually shooting it you're not invested. as in, "I sold my m3 for this silly thing so I better keep it or I sold my m3 for nothing"

I used to think black paint cameras were the only ones to get until I got myself a chrome MP with ostrich skin covering (it has a 0.58 VF and it was cheap, OK?). Now that's a chick magnet. I get remarks from women of all ages. I can tell my wife is annoyed.
Jux, get anything black paint, or chrome with ostrich skin.

If you read your original post, you are clearly in the throes of GAS. Once you give it time, then rationality may take over.

If you actually do sell your M3 in favor of the LTM camera, you WILL have a moment in the future when you realize:
"I sold my M3 for THIS !!!????"
Regret
Regret
Regret.

Then you'll end up more spending more to get an ostrich skinned black M6TTL because it's a chick magnet.

Jux, the women are doing a double take looking at Pete's ostrich skin MP because it looks like its got herpes and they're actually grossed out that someone would carry something like that in public. you should just buy Pete's chrome MP with ostrich skin covering from him, and relieve him (and his wife) of the burden of its overwhelming sex appeal. He's too old for all that attention anyway 😀

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like you're really asking two questions here.

One is "Should I sell my M3 because I don't like it as well as my M6?"
The other is "If I do sell it, should I buy this BP III that I think is cool?"

If I'm reading that correctly, then that's really a little different than just selling the M3 to buy a BP III.

So, should you sell an M3 because you don't like it as well as your M6? Sure. Pass it along to someone who'll use it.

Should you buy a BP III because you think it's cool? Sure. If you think it's cool, you're likely to use it.

Should you sell an M3 just so you can buy a BP III? Um, no. I wouldn't.

Jon, you're just insanely jealous. For you I'll condition the skin with Zovirax before we meet.
Jus, many people prefer Barnack-type Leicas to Ms. There's a thread somewhere here on just that question. I have some of each and rotate through them. To add fuel to the fire, the M2 is the supreme M 🙂, if you're good at estimating exposure.

I think many of us here have Leica LTM cameras.

We get used to the lens mounting / dismounting routine. It involves a lot of revolutions vs a 30 degree rotation with an M lens.

We get used to the separate rangefinder and viewfinder. Is there a variable eyepiece diopter on the RF window on the III?

We get used to the rotating shutter dial on top, and the front mounted slow speed dial. Don't touch that top shutter speed dial when you shoot your picture, or you will slow down the shutter curtains. Also, don't set your shutter speed until you've wound the camera. Those of us with the IIIF RD know the joys of adjusting your flash synchronizer according to your shutter speed.

Above all, you know about trimming the film leader (or fooling around with cards of various sorts) in order to load the camera with film.

However, looking at your camera list, you have an M3, a Kiev 4 and a TLR. It seems to me that you want to sell the M3 to pay for the III.

The Leica LTM approach is very different from the Leica M approach to photography. Think: much slower, and more deliberate. With the III, you're limited to open flash also, as there is no flash synch on the camera. It's for these reasons that I don't suggest that the III be your only Leica camera.

Hi,

At times like this it pays to toss a coin, then wonder if you can live with the answer it gives. It has the advantage of speed and decisiveness.
