That's a 1968, Mike, if the features found in the US model are the same as for other markets.

(Those one-piece bumpers - without the "towel racks" - were introduced in the US in 1968, as was the outside door to the fuel tank. In 1969, the fuel filler door was made more secure by latching shut. It was released by a pull-knob inside the cab and flipped open by a spring in the door hinge. In 1969, there was no longer an indent next to the fuel filler door, used in 1968 to allow a finger to flip the door open.)

PS. When I was a teenager, by biggest aspiration in life was to own a VW Bug. Somehow, I never attained that dream.

I think you've been fooled. That's a Mexican beetle it looks like. They kept the indent behind the fuel door in Mexico until the end of the production. The blinkers in the bumpers were also a feature of Mexican beetles (although I think the very last cars produced in Emden for the German market also had them). Also note the flow-through vent behind the window, which didn't exist in '68. A Mexican brochure for 1989 can be found here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives...tle_mexico.php

Thanks for the link and the observations.

I don't know the details about Mexican Beetles, so I can't speak to that, but I'll accept that you know what you're talking about. You're right about the in-bumper blinkers not being US, as all models coming here until the end had front blinkers on top of the fenders. Also, as you pointed out, the vents behind the rear windows weren't there in 1968; they didn't appear in US models until 1971. Obviously, I missed these details. :(

Wow, Wow, Wow, MIke!! Just two weeks ago I saw the first MGA I had seen in years in my area - South & North Carolina. (No photo opportunity though.)

I don't recall ever seeing an MGA hard-top coupe before. Nifty! Also looks like a paper note is placed under the passenger-side windshield wiper.

The menace of drunk driving. I caught this irresponsible idiot careening down one of the roads on the Long Beach Peninsula on the way to Oysterville. I wonder if he made it or if the cops pulled him over.
